We are pleased to announce that Prof.S.Oliveira has been awarded £1.18m by UKRI for new interdisciplinary project Starpol, in collaboration with Prof.Spence (University of Oxford); Associate Prof.Chatzimichali (University of Bath); Prof.Carter (University of Edinburgh); Dr Vermeylen and Dr Witte (University of Strathclyde).
The aim of STARPOL is to co-develop a new interdisciplinary thermal justice model that combines architectural, engineering, psychological, legal and genetic knowledge on domestic thermal comfort.Despite established research on thermal comfort, evidence of thermal injustice in housing is growing. With combined climate change, cost of living, public health (poly) crises – the challenge is not only a housing issue – it is a design, biological, legal and psychological problem.
Without an interdisciplinary approach, the continued impacts on society are significant. The impacts of the project are widespread including: developing new knowledge for designers that account for diversity of thermal need, as well as benefits to the housing sector in understanding implications of thermal injustice and finally new insights for policymakers in understanding development of better just housing strategies.
Our Newly appointed Visiting Professor Nicholas Boys Smith MBE, Chairman of Create Streets, has been awarded the prestigious RIBA Honorary Fellowship.
This prestigious annual award recognizes non-architects who drive long-term positive change and make significant contributions to the field of architecture and the built environment, including design promotion, sustainability, education, and curation.
The Department is delighted for his achievement and confident Nicholas’ engagement with us will bear fruitful collaboration in the future. Nicholas’ work and ideas span across many aspects of the built environment and we wish to use this opportunity to announce he will deliver his first official lecture beginning of June, to which we hope many will attend. More information will follow.
Congratulations to our PGR Doctoral researcher,
Leena Shwashreh, for her winning entry in the “Best in Theme: relationship with external collaborators”
category of the 2026 Images of Collaboration competition

“erz studio is an environmental design practice specialising in urbanism, landscape, design and strategy. Their landscape led approach to master planning is grounded in research and co design and results in beautiful places for people to live in. This talk, by director Felicity Steers and urban designer Finn Delaney, explores their unique approach to the design process illustrated by their work in the Maryhill North TRA which unlocked an “undevelopable”landscape. “
