New single AND music video dropping Wednesday! This is a big one for me…it’s the first song with my own lyrics that I’ve released in over a decade. If you know me, you know I’ve struggled with chronic illness for the past 12 years after a series of neurological infections wreaked havoc on me in all kinds of ways and has led to a condition known in the scientific community as “that disease Celine Dion has.” During this time I suffered from amnesia (sorry, have we met before?), seizures, brain fog, night sweats, and all kinds of other good stuff. It was like trick or treat, but instead of lots of different kinds of candy it’s lots of different kinds of fucking my shit up. It was difficult to survive, let alone create anything. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I really started making music again, and even then the weight of my experience seemed to leave me at a loss for words. I couldn’t write lyrics and focused instead on producing instrumentals. Earlier this year I finally sat down and wrote some lyrics with the intention of just writing something that was fun to me, something the world would never hear. It was silly, it made me laugh, it gave language to my frustration. It also contained fragments of my experience and perspective of the world after entering a wormhole of overwhelming medical trauma in my early 20s and emerging just enough in my mid-30s to come up for air for a second, look around, and be like “YO, WHAT IS GOING ON OUT HERE??” So I produced the song and decided that I think there might be some other people out there who find it entertaining, funny, refreshing, real—whatever—and I’m releasing it. It’s about a lot of different things and I’m excited for you to hear it. The song also led me back to one of my other long-time creative loves: film. So I’ll be releasing a music video that I wrote and directed with a cast and crew of unbelievably talented, generous, and lovely people. This was my first time being in a music video, let alone directing one, and it was pretty hard. But it was also one of the best experiences of my life. So it goes. Interrupting the flow of music-related posts for a little personal update… After an 11 year journey of chronic illness, beginning with viral meningitis in 2012 and lyme disease in 2015, I finally have a diagnosis that explains the past 6 years of disabling symptoms that have left me exhausted and unable do things many people my age might take for granted. For years I’ve had to become my own health advocate and have tirelessly researched my symptoms and the mechanics of how they manifest. Last year I had a strong feeling that I was suffering from Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS)—two neurologists and a year later, this diagnosis was finally confirmed through blood testing by Mayo Clinic last month. SPS is a rare autoimmune neurological condition and takes an average of 6 years to be diagnosed with this due to how uncommon it is (many doctors have never even heard of it). This is my first week of IVIG treatment for this condition, which I never would have been able to do if I had given up after my first neurologist was unable to provide me with a specific diagnosis other than “post-encephalitis syndrome.” I’m hoping this treatment will ease my symptoms and allow me to get back to doing all the things I’ve been wanting to do but haven’t been able to because of the pain I experience every day. All your support and encouragement of my music (and baking) endeavors keep me going—hoping for better days ahead.
