More Than a Soup Kitchen issue 007 is available now. As the name suggests, we are more than a soup kitchen. We are an anthology of stories of hope and transformation. Every story asks us to pause long enough to see what we might have missed. A moment of courage. A quiet kindness. A life held together by the steady hands of others. The stories in these pages invite you to step into those moments. To feel the weight someone else has carried, the hope they’ve reached for, and the grace that met them along the way. They remind us that what changes a life is rarely loud or dramatic. It is the simple act of showing up for one another, again and again, in the places we least expect to be transformed. We’re grateful to celebrate the opening of Caritas St. Matthews, a newly refurbished affordable housing community from Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Formerly known as McFarlane Place and Visitation House, this renewed space will continue serving Veterans and Hospital to Healthy Housing clients, now with expanded opportunity to provide stable, affordable housing for even more people. This is more than a building. It’s a place to come home, find stability, and be part of a caring community. With the support of the @arch_stl , we’re able to continue growing access to safe, dignified housing across our community. We’re also grateful to Father Scott Jones, Episcopal Vicar of the North Vicariate, for blessing this space and the lives that will be lived here.

Healing isn’t a clean break from the past. For Jerry, it’s been a long, stubborn apprenticeship to hope. One that has unfolded over 30 years inside Shamrock Club. He first arrived when life was collapsing faster than he could stand up. He didn't find a quick fix; he found a steady place and a caseworker who told him, "You’re not done yet." Today, Jerry has his own home, but he still shows up every day to grab a broom and help the next person find their way. Because after three decades, he’s realized the most important truth of all: you don't have to walk the journey alone. Read Jerry’s full story of resilience at the link in our bio.

On the Feast of Saint Patrick, we’re reflecting on our namesake. Saint Patrick knew what it meant to struggle, and chose to spend his life serving others anyway. That’s the legacy we carry at Catholic Charities ministry St. Patrick Center. Showing up. Creating paths to stability. Walking alongside people as they rebuild. A reminder that stands in our lobby every day. Happy St. Patrick's Day. 💚☘️ #ccstloneministry

It started with a social worker asking why people had nowhere to go. In the early 1980s, Edith Cunnane began spending her days off walking the streets of downtown St. Louis, talking with people experiencing homelessness and trying to understand their stories. What she found moved her to act. With the support of community and Church leaders, that concern became Catholic Charities ministry St. Patrick Center, which opened its doors in 1983 to serve neighbors who had lost everything. More than four decades later, her compassion lives on through the many women who continue shaping our mission, coworkers, volunteers, leaders, and advocates working every day to help our neighbors rebuild their lives. This #InternationalWomensDay, we honor Edith and the women who carry that work forward.

@sacredgrounds.cafe inside the Central Library was never just about coffee. It was about someone working again after years without steady employment. A case manager offering encouragement. Customers who came back week after week because they believed in what was happening behind the counter. We saw hesitation turn into confidence, routine turn into stability, and pride replace doubt. As this chapter at the Central Library comes to a close, we’re not erasing what it meant. We’re carrying it forward. The mission behind Sacred Grounds, building skills, confidence, and a path toward sustainable employment, continues. In fact, it’s evolving. We are shaping new pathways to empower the people we serve with even stronger support and opportunity. If you ever bought a cup of coffee, shared a conversation, or simply chose to support the work, thank you. You were part of someone’s progress. This space is closing. The work is not.

Some of these photos were taken in 1996. Nearly 30 years ago, the coffee was poured from a different pot. The chairs may have looked different. The faces have changed. But the mission hasn’t. Yes, meals are served here. But what really happens inside these walls is trust and dignity being rebuilt. Through intensive case management and outpatient behavioral health services, our team has walked with neighbors navigating mental health challenges and substance use recovery while meeting immediate needs like meals, laundry, and a safe place to rest during the day. The work may look simple on the surface. But it’s in these ordinary, steady moments where lives are transformed. #ccstloneministry
