More than 1,000 Kenyans have been recruited into Russia’s war in Ukraine. Many did not sign up to fight. They were promised jobs in driving, security, and a better pay. Instead, they ended up on the frontlines. Recruiters target young men facing economic hardship, moving them through the Middle Eastern transit routes, before being pushed into military contracts they barely understand. Some have been injured. Some are missing. Others never returned. Click the link in bio to read the full report by Dialika Neufeld @dialikaneu and Jonathan Stock for Der Spiegel @spiegelmagazin , featuring Dancan Chege and Evans Kibet Sullo; a former long distance marathoner. These are two Kenyan men who have witnessed the war. One escaped; the other is now a prisoner of war. Photos by © Brian Otieno @storitellah #storitellah #storitellahdiaries #tellahtales

Today. Four years ago. Marshmallow was born. Watching this little girl grow has been one of our greatest joys. Her laughter fills the household, and her curiosity keeps us amazed. We love seeing you dance through this life in your most unique way. Keep learning. Keep exploring and keep being you every single day. Happy birthday, baby girl. Photo by ©️ Brian Otieno @storitellah

Mogadishu, a city in the midst of a remarkable, yet fragile, ascent. Despite decades of brutal civil war and the persistent threat posed by groups like Al-Shabaab, a new elite and returning diaspora are fueling a construction boom, transforming the skyline with apartment towers, filling the streets with chic cafés and a vibrant nightlife. The people here have collectively decided to reclaim their city and not let fear stop life, even as armoured guards and checkpoints remain visible. Click the link on the bio to read the report of this metropolis rising from the ruins, written by Fritz Habekuß @fritzimportexport , and photos by Brian Otieno @storitellah , in Mogadishu, Somalia, for @zeit . When a place is constantly described as broken, dangerous, or hopeless, the people who grow up there don't just hear it. They absorb it. Growing up in Kibera, and as a teenager beginning to know the world beyond it, I often felt scared, reluctant, even ashamed to say where I was from. THIS IS WHERE I'M FROM was born so that young people in my community don't have to carry the same weight. Because in a place so often described as darkness, there is also hope, joy, and light. And when young people see their lives reflected with dignity and care, something shifts. Representation doesn't just change how others see us. It changes how we see ourselves.
