Mogadishu, a city in the midst of a remarkable, yet fragile, ascent. Despite decades of brutal civil war and the persistent threat posed by groups like Al-Shabaab, a new elite and returning diaspora are fueling a construction boom, transforming the skyline with apartment towers, filling the streets with chic cafés and a vibrant nightlife. The people here have collectively decided to reclaim their city and not let fear stop life, even as armoured guards and checkpoints remain visible.
