#tbttech This one goes out to a real game-changer. Believe it or not, there was a time before everybody walking in the street or riding the subway had their own soundtrack riding along with them to color their commute.
That all changed when @sony released the #walkman in 1979. All of a sudden punks and financiers alike could bring their cassette (pronounced /keˈset/)tapes and play them anywhere they pleased. And bring them they did. By the time Sony discontinued the Walkman in 2010, they sold 400m of them, including 200m cassette versions.
Today, the nostalgia for these iconic musical time capsules is nearly universal among users, and proved to have so much staying power that Sony decided to release a brand new version just this year (without the funny plastic rectangle things). Fond memories of parking at makeout point and showing your crush your latest emo mixtape aside, this little powerhouse started a revolution which continues to this day: smaller, more portable, more personal tech. Here's to you, Walkman!
