In physical terms, Nicole Trunfio’s ranch in Texas is about as far from home as you can get. But as the WA-born supermodel tells Megan French in this weekend’s STM, there are plenty of parallels to where she grew up in Merredin. While some of ranch life is pretty low-key — “I love getting my hands dirty, mowing the lawn, planting trees” — Trunfio turned on the glamour for this special shoot in Austin, on the property she shares with her husband, musician Gary Clarke Jr, and their three children. It was a special full-circle moment to celebrate 21 years of STM, as @nictrunfio remembers being on the cover several times over her career, including way back in 2004. Forever one of our favourites. #STMPerth #STM21 Photography: Brittani Lepley @britnay Story: Megan French @thefrenchfawn Styling: Valeria Hernandez @stylingxval Hair: Perla Rodriguez @perlamorph

Harley Reid is a good sport — and not just when it comes to footy. The #WestCoastEagles star was affable throughout this special shoot for #STMPerth, even happily donning an 80s-inspired sportswear get-up to celebrate 40 years since Crown Perth opened in 1985. Reid’s easy-going energy lasted through outfit changes, having his new mullet zhooshed (and no, it’s not permed, for those asking) and a fully-clothed dip in the pool, through to posing for selfies with strangers and answering every request with a “Yeah, easy”. The midfielder, who is Crown’s principal entertainment and venue partner, also chatted to Jade Jurewicz about moving interstate on his own as a teen, the challenges of being a public figure, and remaining focussed on being at his best on and off the field. When STM’s first edition hit the streets early in 2004, Rebecca Twigley’s life was sweet and pretty simple. Newly 21, she had just switched degrees to study speech pathology and she was a few months into dating West Coast superstar Chris Judd, after a classic Perth love story involving meeting at Club Bay View and later, a Sunday session kiss at the Cottesloe Beach Hotel. But by the time STM’s first anniversary rolled around, things looked very different— courtesy of a daring, red Ruth Tarvydas dress, worn to the Brownlow Medal later in 2004, as Judd won the AFL’s best-and-fairest award for the first time. Looking back on it, now Bec Judd and juggling a media career with parenting the couple’s four children, it was a sliding doors moment she didn’t see coming. As #STMPerth celebrates its 21st year, Judd flew home to Perth for a special shoot, exclusive interview and to guest edit the magazine, choosing party looks from local designers for fashion and giving her top #WA tips in STM Loves. If this indulgent bathroom isn’t fit for a queen, we don’t know what is. In this weekend’s Home Edit, @housenerd is showcasing this stunning space — once a 1905 shopfront and 1920s bakery warehouse — renovated by boutique design studio ANNA.CARIN. Interior designer Anna-Carin McNamara wanted honour the building’s history in the bathroom, and her client’s request to feel like Marie Antoinette in there. Read the full story in Sunday’s STM. The unexpected collision of equestrian aesthetics and underground rave culture. A dissection of femininity in the age of “tradwife” trends and the manosphere. The desire for a slower pace, sustainable practices and the preservation of tradition. These are just some of the diverse inspirations for the emerging WA fashion designers taking part in this year’s anticipated Pulse fashion show, at AGWA on May 23. In this weekend’s STM, @thefrenchfawn talks to three of the 30 fashion graduates selected, from North Metropolitan TAFE, South Metropolitan TAFE and Curtin University, including Olivia Grace, whose award-winning Disc Jockey collection grew from an exploration of the incongruous combination of equestrian and rave themes. “I wanted to combine something structured and historical with something spontaneous and freeing,” she says. Sasha McDonnell’s collection, Due Process, aims to spark conversations about the way gender expectations and conservative ideals were targeted at young women online and Edelcita Milan’s State of Opulence garments blends slow fashion, traditional craftsmanship and new technologies for luxurious silhouettes inspired by the traditional dress of her native Philippines. Each year, when the entrants to The West Australian Pulse cross the STM desk, it is exciting to consider that these artists are not yet out of their teens. Considering the quality and creativity of the work they are producing so early on, the possibilities for their creative lives feel endless. In STM this weekend, Jade Jurewicz talks to five of the Year 12 visual arts graduates who are being exhibited at AGWA about the origins of their art, from musings on violence against women to an examination of food as an intergenerational love language and a deeply personal project honouring survivors of the Stolen Generation. Today’s cover features the work titled Like a Moth to a Flame, by Hannah Marinovich-Zano from Seton Catholic College, whose entry was inspired by the Oscar Wilde line “a burnt child loves the fire” and reflects on how familiarity can make even the most dangerous situations feel safe. Read the full story in STM and see the exhibition, with work from 63 students, at AGWA from this weekend. Portrait photography: Andrew Ritchie Artwork photography: Christophe Canato

It’s hard to believe that Freo's Bread In Common has been serving diners under its stylish pendant lights since 2013. Its section of the port city is thriving these days — home to fabulous restaurants including Vin Populi and Ode To Sirens — but as food reviewer Katherine Fleming discovers this week, the old favourite remains mostly unchanged. The hanging lights, the long tables, great service and those famed lamb ribs with black garlic and mint and the duck fat potatoes are still on the menu. Read this weekend’s review to see if the stalwart lives up to its past highs.

With everything from skincare to sleep to protein and fitness getting “maxxed” — gen z shorthand for going all-in on optimising something — it was only a matter of time before the trend hit the interiors world. Enter “nonna-maxxing”: a trend where people adopt the routines of an Italian grandmother to combat burnout. Think cooking from scratch, walks, staying off socials, face-to-face conversations and activities like crochet, reading and looking after plants. In this weekend’s #HomeEdit, @housenerd speaks to Dulux’s Lauren Treloar about the trend and reveals how simple it can be to achieve the look in your own #home through incorporating textiles with clashing patterns, cosy throws, colourful textured rugs, cushions and linens. 📸: Lisa Cohen

What do #HeatedRivalry fans, astrology girlies and biohackers have in common? You won’t need to ask — they’ll tell you. Bad jokes aside, as Jade Jurewicz writes in Screen Queen this week, if the inescapable fandom for series like the #ConnorStorrie and #HudsonWilliams-fronted steamy slow-burn, period drama #Bridgerton and the adaption of Jilly Cooper’s #Rivals is anything to go by, viewers are yearning for shows packed with sex, scandal and suspense. And now Rivals is back on #Disney with a bang, literally, with the bonkbuster set to pick up where it left off. The season two trailer reveals that Tony survived Cameron’s whack over the head, the station rivalry continues and the will-they-won’t-they romances continue to blossom. Also in #TV this week: #RealHousewivesofRhodeIsland on Hayu might just be one of the best iterations of the franchise yet, and fans can get up close and personal with #JasonMomoa in On The Roam on Max.

A sense of nostalgia washes over food reviewer Jade Jurewicz each time she drives down the Scarborough Beach strip. It smells faintly of tequila, feels like a sticky floor and looks like checking your bank account in the hope there is enough in there for the Uber home. A decade ago, its bars were less about what many of us were drinking and more about how quickly we could guzzle it. Now, just down the road, @brightonwinebar feels like the next era for “grown-ups” looking for a delicious drop in a fine-stemmed glass and something tasty to pair with it, eaten sitting down, at a reasonable hour. In this weekend’s edition, Jurewicz couldn’t be happier to sample from its seafood-strong menu (though is that a nostalgic Tim Tam slam she peered tucked in the cocktail menu?) and leave while younger punters are still queuing up along the strip. 📸: @shotbythom

In the era of TikTok, virtually any artist can become an internet phenomenon overnight. What matters more is whether they have the experience and stamina to run with the attention once it comes their way. Just a year ago, Swedish pop star #ZaraLarsson, who at 28 is a music industry veteran after signing her first record deal at 14, was toiling away in pop’s lower-middle class, says The New York Times’ Olivia Horn. Then she caught the eye of the online masses when her vocals featured on a popular meme with rainbow-streaked dolphins and dissonant captions, like “I have social anxiety”. Larsson took the viral moment and ran with it, seeing the resurgence of earlier hits like #LushLife and building momentum for her latest album, #MidnightSun. Now, she’s selling out shows around the world, including at Perth’s RAC Arena. Read the full NYT story on her return to stardom in #STMPerth this weekend. Motherhood can be a wild experience but it helps if you can see the funny side - which just so happens to be Katie Lamb’s specialty. This weekend, the Triple M breakfast presenter, also known for her hilarious videos on social media, is celebrating her first #MothersDay with daughter Charlie and fiancee Martene Pearman. In Sunday’s STM, Lamb says she felt nervous about how her life might change but since her daughter was born, she’d found it “such a fun chapter in my life, because it’s brought so much more laughter and love and joy”. As she balances motherhood with her dream job hosting the 92.9 Triple M breakfast show with Xavier Ellis, plus keeping up with demand for her social media videos, Lamb says a whole new world of content possibilities has opened up. “The unsolicited advice has been my absolute favourite thing … people coming up to you with things like, ‘oh, you just need to sleep when the baby sleeps’,” she jokes. “Like . . . as if. It’s so funny.” Read the full story inside #STMPerth this weekend. Photography: Andrew Ritchie Hair and make-up: Pia Donaldson
