From “miracle cures” to real medical breakthroughs, St. Louis has seen it all. 👀 A new article co-authored by Kristina Hampton, MA, Manager of Collections & Special Projects/Exhibits at the Saint Louis Science Center, alongside Dr. James R. Wright, Jr. of the University of Calgary, explores the fascinating story of the St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society (SLMMS)’s Medical Historical Museum, and the National Museum of Quackery. Featuring nearly 12,000 artifacts (including FDA-confiscated devices that made bold, and often dangerous, health claims), this collection now lives on at the Science Center. Today, many of these rare and surprising objects are on display in Inside The Vault, where you can step into one of the largest collections showcases in decades and uncover how medicine has evolved, from questionable cures to scientific breakthroughs. 🔬 Discover the history. Question the claims. See the artifacts for yourself. 🔗 Read more at slsc.org

UPDATE: This has been resolved. All areas of the Science Center are now open to guests, as is the McDonnell Planetarium entrance. Due to a water main break within Forest Park, the entrance to the James S. McDonnell Planetarium is currently closed as of 10 a.m., May 7, 2026. The Planetarium exhibits, as well as the Experience Flight and Inside the Vault galleries, are also temporarily closed. All other galleries within the Saint Louis Science Center remain open. Guests should use the 5050 Oakland Avenue Main Entrance to access the Science Center.
