TERN is proud to present Bahamian interdisciplinary artist, Steven Schmid (@stevenhschmid ) for our series, "The Reintroduction". The Reintroduction gives viewers insight into artists' practices and a sneak peek into their studios. We are reintroducing Steven's practice, but also previewing the two-person exhibition, "Me 'n' Mines" featuring Heino and Steven Schmid - on view now through 1st November 2025 at TERN. Using the figure as a central point of exploration, Schmid constructs an aesthetic that explores how personal histories, stories, and ideologies physically exist within a body, while also imagining how a body filled with contradictions may become a site of individualism and decolonial representation. Steven Schmid is a Bahamian interdisciplinary artist whose work explores themes of masculinity and otherness through painting, collage and assemblage. Adopting Hip-Hop production and sampling as a visual practice, Schmid’s current research explores how laughter, humour and play can imagine more expansive representations of Bahamian masculinity and individualism. He has exhibited in several galleries and fairs including Gallery House in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, TERN Gallery in Nassau, The Bahamas, The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas and SCOPE Art Fair in Miami, Florida, United States. Schmid received his BFA in Film, Video and Integrated Media from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2016 and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art, Media & Design from Ontario College of Art & Design University in 2022. He currently lives and works in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. To watch the full video, head to the YouTube link LIVE in our bio right now! © 2025 TERN Shot and edited by The Revery Collective

The aesthetics for the larger three works I made for Me ‘n’ Mines were inspired from a short trip I took with Heino, Tessa and my niece. My niece was making these bouquets out of little flowers from the grass in the front yard and giving one to each of us a couple times a day. With Heino’s suggestion, she would even place some in acorns to give them a little more sophistication and pizazz. I loved the visual contrast of the acorns and the flowers, the poetics of the rigid and the delicate, and the care she took to put these together, a couple of them taking an hour to collect and assemble. When I went back home, I immediately started work on would become the largest handmade paper piece I’ve made so far, “I See You In Everything”. It took me a bit to figure it out but I love the beautiful mess it became. Very organic, playful, delicate, raw and filled with various materials I’ve collected or made over the last five years, including a little drawing of a flower that my niece drew on a post-it note during the trip. It’s a coded documentation of my family and personal history and an extraordinary manifestation of our short, chill time together this past June. Me ‘n’ Mines with @schmidheino is up at @terngallery until Oct. 25. Last year I was awarded a research grant that took me and Heino to Germany to learn more about my father’s side of the family. We met in London and travelled to Vienna to Graz to Munich to Albstadt and to Frankfurt over 6 days. One of the days, we visited my aunt who I met for the first time. She gave us a number of photos spanning 90+ years and told us stories about my father, mommy visiting and the rest of the family growing up. A few of the images of my father smiling as a child, my aunt’s drawings from the 1930’s and images of me and Heino throughout the trip made it into the last few works of my Look At Us, Together series in 2024. Some of the photos that I got from that trip also included images of my father’s meals and its plating. The presentation always seemed very monstrous and grotesque, yet beautiful and calming like some biblically, accurate angel. For this new body of work, I limited the amount of figuration in each piece and turned to those images to help me consider more abstracted forms of representation, familial documentation and storytelling. The composition for “We Create Magic of Our Own” was loosely based off of one of these presentations. This was one of the unique ways that, in 40 years when I see this body of work, I’ll remember how amazing that trip with Heino was and how this show came together. Also, Gio still say I’s a pie 🥧 Me ‘n’ Mines is open @terngallery until October 25. @schmidheino We Create Magic Of Our Own Acrylic, Assemblage, Colouring Pencils, Image Transfer on Handmade Paper 28.75 x 28.75 inches 2025 📸 @lfdocumentation

During my MFA, my advisor Julius Manapul told me, “When you finish you this program, you should have way more questions than answers. And if all you’re doing is presenting answers, then you’re doing this art thing wrong.” I think about that all time because it taught me that in order to have a sustainable practice, you have to take your time and simply be…curious. Having a genuine curiosity for making, process and material has kept this art thing fresh, fun and fascinating for both me and Heino. I’ve been at it 15 years, Heino for 25 (I just heard Kevin Hart say DAMN! after writing that), and I’m still amazed that we both continue to bring something authentic, new and nuanced to our practices. I think you’ll see that in this body of work. Me ‘n’ Mines w/ @schmidheino opens today at 530-8pm and is up until October 25 @terngallery So Close I Could Taste It Acrylic, Assemblage, Colouring Pencils, Image Transfer on Handmade Paper 28.25 x 43.5 inches 2025
