“Hey Steve, what‘s for lunch?”
Sorry, folks—my time in America is coming to an end.
I always thought I loved the US for itself, and honestly, I did. Why? Because of the people here: friends, classmates, neighbors, even strangers. Without them, I don’t think I‘d have such fond memories of Atlanta or America. Your daily kindness, selflessness, and sense of justice have deeply moved me. Thank you. With you all here, life became interesting and colorful. I love y’all!
It‘s no exaggeration to say these four years of studying in Atlanta completely changed me. First came the learning at SCAD, then the personal growth, and then all the experiences: laughter, tears, fun, loneliness, clinking glasses with friends until we got drunk; Joy, disappointment, accomplishment, pride, excitement, warmth, sob, injustice, happiness, reluctance, longing, farewells, life and death, danger, betrayal; racism, chasing deadlines, sleep deprivation, nonstop work; trying new things, bravery, fear, self-blame, confusion, doubt, determination, independence, dependence, and so much more... It feels like enough material for a whole book—truly rich life experiences!
I’ve just left this place, but our connection remains unbroken! Come to Beijing, and we‘ll grab a bite together—I’m a seasoned foodie! To my friends still in the States, whatever your goals, keep pushing forward. Go for it! Work hard! Wishing you all success!
May everyone stay healthy and happy every day!
America, we‘ll meet again someday!
Yours truly and always,
Steve Yili Ma
