Lighting tests with @hansaulo I’ve been thinking a lot recently about what really gets me excited in photography, and what I just feel I should do because everyone else is doing it. So I’m pushing the styles and techniques that get me really excited and seeing where I end up.

Always a pleasure working with the BBC’s first disinformation specialist and social media correspondent @mariannaspringbbc and so I was very happy to shoot the cover for her new podcast (with Matt Shea), Top Comment. Excellent concept and art direction by @nathan.david.jones

Maximum buffness with @markfoy__

I’m a big fan of the creative portrait possibilities of both coloured light and also mixing flash with long exposures, so when I shot @markfoy__ recently we knew we wanted to include some blurry, colourful fun in the mix. Rather than having Mark move, I subtly jiggled the camera as I shot, trying to find the magic frequency that gave a nice ghosted feel but didn’t completely obscure his face.

Another angle on the same location with @angonxo , shooting through the mesh and trying to reveal just enough of Amanda’s facial features to allow the viewer to connect with her, while at the same time showing and acknowledging the barrier between us and her. I also like that there’s no visual clutter, just the mesh, and then the smaller mesh of the back of the tunnel in the background.

More shots with @angonxo , using the industrial architecture of Canning Town in East London, which as a place is a weird mixture of flashy new housing developments and the old, semi wild industrial landscape of the past, a strange hinterland that still has neglected spots just waiting to be used for photoshoots. We lost the sunshine soon after these shots, but were lucky enough to get the sun shining through the chain link mesh which I combined with a fill light behind the camera and another giving a pop of light behind Amanda to create the lighting. Thanks to @hansaulo for helping me out and BTSing.

As soon as I saw this spot I knew the exact image that I wanted to create there. Evocative of New York subway trains, the East London DLR, and the utilitarian steel architecture surrounding it, makes for the perfect background for @angonxo . I used an ND filter a to allow me to shoot at a slow enough shutter speed to blur the trains, which luckily passed every couple of minutes giving us a@few goes at the shot. Even so I only had time for 4 or 5 frames each time a train went past, luckily Amanda was a pro and, having discussed what we were going to do between trains, gave great poses as they passed behind her. Thanks also to @hansaulo for helping out on the day.

Another setup with @katiesummerfitness , this time an action shot, and by this point in the day the sun had disappeared so I really wanted to recreate the bright sunshine with flash. Shooting action with flash is tricky as you can’t just shoot 20 frames on motor drive and pick the best moment later, you only get one shot each time round. So working with a pro like Katie was great as she was very consistent which meant I could get a feel for the timing and capture the exact moment in the stride when her weight was off both feet and her limbs were extended. Thanks as always to @amandabrightactor for helping me out and shooting the BTS videos and stills.

More shooting on the streets of London with @katiesummerfitness Bank and The City (London’s banking district) is a great place to shoot at the weekend as it’s almost 100% offices, so very few people are around outside working hours (apart from the aforementioned running clubs). Thanks again to @amandabrightactor for giving up her Saturday morning to help me out and also shoot some great BTS as well, and to Katie for being great to work with and never once complaining about sitting on freezing cold stone or tarmac in short shorts.
