@steve21smith congrats on the floor. I remember that floor well. I was part of the Henry Ford Trojan basketball team that stopped your 58 games triple double streak! We matched up in a couple of Saint summer games. You were always one of my favorite because you were amazing with the younger kids when they came around you. I’m proud that you are a Detroiter!
Michigan State 90-91 & 99-00 Swingman Uniforms
Michigan native Steve Smith played for the Michigan State Spartans from 1987 - 91. His best years in East Lansing were his junior and senior seasons. In both of those years, the Spartans played in the March tournament. In the 1990 - 91 season, Smith averaged 25.1 points per game and 6.1 rebounds.
Smith left Michigan State as the school’s all-time leader in points with 2,263. In his four year career there, he averaged 18.5 points and 6.1 rebounds.
The 1999 - 00 Michigan State Spartans won the school’s second national championship when they defeated Florida in the final game, 89 - 76. The team was led by Flint, Michigan native, Mateen Cleaves.
Cleaves, a guard, played for Michigan State from 1996 - 00. In his senior year, as the Spartans were on their way to the title, Cleaves averaged 12.1 points per game and 6.9 assists. After their championship win Mateen was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2000 NCAA Tournament.
One of the most beloved players in MSU history, Cleaves is currently 2nd in career assists and assists per game, and first all-time in steals and steals per game, in Spartan history.
