Last year I took a road trip on Vancouver Island with my best friend and every evening I edited videos from that day into a quick clip that I shared only on my stories. I didn’t share them properly the first time around because they were just thrown together quickly and I didn’t think they were polished enough. ????????? Honestly whatever. I’m already filming on my phone through the viewfinder of my film camera because I’m obsessed with how my iphone 12 mini tries so so hard to comprehend the soft colours funnelling through this 50mm prime lens in a way that results in this burnt-in imperfect compression of memories. So here are those clips, pulled off my hard drive ten minutes ago in the middle of the night, because this month I’ll be flying out to see her again and I’ve never been anywhere so beautiful. If you ever have an opportunity to take a road trip with a nature photographer, take it. And look at her owl pictures they’re unreal @courtney.wild.life

Obsessed with the way the sun can still cast warm light on the coldest days. I wish I could say I waited until the freezing temperatures broke but I got impatient and went out for as long as I could stand it a couple weeks ago when it was -13.

They should have sent a poet. Just to let you in on some of the love I feel for this world. Through Mary Oliver’s words and my eyes. (Also this is a blatant admission that everything I do is actually just a ploy to get people to watch the movie Contact.) Starlings in Winter
by Mary Oliver Chunky and noisy, but with stars in their black feathers,
they spring from the telephone wire
and instantly they are acrobats
in the freezing wind.
And now, in the theater of air,
they swing over buildings, dipping and rising;
they float like one stippled star
that opens,
becomes for a moment fragmented, then closes again;
and you watch
and you try
but you simply can’t imagine how they do it
with no articulated instruction, no pause,
only the silent confirmation
that they are this notable thing, this wheel of many parts, that can rise and spin
over and over again,
full of gorgeous life. Ah, world, what lessons you prepare for us,
even in the leafless winter,
even in the ashy city.
I am thinking now
of grief, and of getting past it; I feel my boots
trying to leave the ground,
I feel my heart
pumping hard. I want to think again of dangerous and noble things.
I want to be light and frolicsome.
I want to be improbable beautiful and afraid of nothing,
as though I had wings.

pretending I’m caravaggio or something searching for chiaroscuro. a lighting effect featuring heavily contrasted light and dark, from Italian chiaro (clear, bright) + oscuro (dark, obscure)

Video journal entry made of clips taken on my phone at Cherry Beach in the middle of my cold work day today because this world deserves to be appreciated out loud (For those who can’t be bothered to read my handwriting: This morning it was -15° and windy. I work on film sets, mostly outside. In the summer I take every opportunity to go to the beach before / between / after jobs. Today I took 30 minutes and realized that the frozen lake can be just as worth it.)

Another contribution to a little chat about the confronting nature of a wide lens, amongst other things. While it might open up the frame, it almost feels as if the viewer has their back to a wall and is forced to acknowledge their proximity to the scene. They are an active participant in a space that is watching them back. Taken at 20mm on #lumixs5ii

Having fun taking pictures from high places. My favourite wide lens photos recently have been framed horizontally but I’ll post those ones later #lumixs5ii
