How can AI help make drinking water safe?
22 million Americans get their drinking water through toxic lead pipes, with low income communities being heavily affected. Efforts to manually identify these pipes and then replace them are slow.
BlueConduit, a Google.org grantee, is a data analytics company that uses machine learning to help water utilities identify and then replace lead service lines, improving water safety and reducing costs. They used publicly available information like location, building age, property values, in addition to other factors to develop algorithms that can quickly determine the likelihood of lead pipes in a given area.

How can Al help with disaster relief? GiveDirectly is one of a few nonprofit organizations leveraging Al to expand their reach. They help families living in extreme poverty rebuild after environmental disasters by helping to distribute unconditional cash transfers to these individuals via mobile phone.
With support from Google.org, GiveDirectly has been able to develop Al tools to accelerate and more effectively target these payments. Their Al model is trained to recognize buildings in publicly available satellite imagery, and to identify damage by comparing before and after images. The tool then overlays this information with population data--things like infrastructure, income distribution, participation in assistance programs, and even details like whether roofs are metal or thatched --to identify areas where need is greatest. With these tools, GiveDirectly can distribute rapid cash payments to thousands of people in just hours.

In 2024, Google launched Google Rising Influencers with Disabilities Program or ✨GRID✨ A six-month fellowship designed with and for creators with disabilities.
The program covers key skills for digital creators, lessons from industry thought leaders, and provides members with a direct connection to Google product teams.
I had the honor of designing and animating the logo for this incredible program, taking care to make the final design color accessible.
The GRID team wanted a logo with a strong sense of motion, that represented the individuality of the participants and their goals as well as the interconnectedness of the fellowship. The hashtag was a perfect vehicle for this—it’s a grid with strong ties to social media, and its interwoven structure symbolizes both the individual paths and the collaborative spirit that defines the fellowship.
