The Disney-MGM Studios opened on this day in 1989, and here's a few historical tidbits for you:
1) The entrance gate is modeled after the now long-gone Pan Pacific auditorium, whose fence myself & a friend of mine from film school scaled to sneak inside to take photos, long before it burned down.
2) The Chinese Theater centerpiece is actually MORE accurate than the original on Hollywood Blvd! I worked at the Chinese theater in 1981 and as you can see from my yellow, smog-tinted photo, a lot of the decor in the main pagoda was damaged and instead of fixing it, they just tore it out. The Imagineers could supply the current owners with exact replicas of ALL of it to restore it.
3) Several years before the park opened, I was shooting animation for a small film studio in Hollywood that had been around since the 1940s. I needed a part for my Acme camera & the ancient rolodex gave me an address in Glendale.
I pulled into the gravel parking lot in back of the building, climbed onto the loading dock, announced my presence but there wasn't a soul in sight. I walked around the inside and every office was empty, but all the lights were on. I walked into one room & saw an amazing tabletop model. I noticed the Chinese theater miniature & some characters from the Wizard of Oz, and suddenly realized I was NOT at the Acme camera company & I was looking at a model of the Disney-MGM theme park at an Imagineering satellite building!
I hightailed it out of there and as I was leaving a gentleman showed up and STERNLY watched as I drove out whilst he remotely closed the gate behind me! 🎬😊
