One of the most rewarding parts of landscape architecture is knowing the work is never truly finished the day it’s installed. Our gardens are designed to evolve. To soften. To settle in.
What begins as young planting eventually becomes atmosphere. Canopies widen, textures deepen, stone gathers patina, and spaces between plants slowly disappear. The landscape starts to feel as though it has always belonged there.
As Michael Van Valkenburgh once noted, unlike architecture, landscapes “almost always improve” with time. The most enduring gardens are designed with that future in mind.

The secret to exceptional outdoor living isn’t one grand gesture. It’s the thoughtful layering of details that shape how a space is experienced and lived in.
Water, for instance, changes everything. Beyond beauty, the sound of moving water creates atmosphere and introduces sense of calm permanence that instantly makes a landscape feel established.
Plantings play an equally important role, especially when they respond to the architecture rather than compete with it. Cohesive outdoor environments are created when planting design feels integrated with the architecture and natural character of the site, rather than simply added afterward.
This may come as no surprise but exceptional outdoor spaces are designed to be lived in. Comfortable, intentional seating invites people to slow down, gather and experience the landscape. Well placed furnishing arrangements transforms a garden from something admired into something inhabited.
And finally, every memorable landscape needs moments that pull you forward. A sculptural tree, an element at the end of an axis, layered pathways, or a quiet architectural detail hidden beyond a garden wall. Great landscapes create curiosity.

A meaningful honor, and one very well deserved.
We are incredibly proud to share that Stephen has been named a recipient of the UT Gardens Legend Award, recognizing individuals whose work has made a lasting impact on horticulture, landscape design, and garden education.
Established in 2013, the award is given thoughtfully and only when it’s warranted, which makes the recognition all the more significant. Recipients are selected by a committee of University of Tennessee Gardens leadership, university representatives, and members of the Knoxville gardening community, ensuring it reflects both professional excellence and meaningful local influence.
Working alongside Stephen, we see the impact in the details. In the way each project is approached with intention, in the respect for context and history, and in the quiet discipline it takes to do things the right way, every time. His influence extends well beyond individual projects and continues to shape how we think about the work as a whole.
We are all immensely proud to be a part of the team he’s shaped and are grateful for the standards he sets daily. We are looking forward to seeing how his legacy continues to grow and leave its mark.

With summer just around the corner, we’re reminiscing on one of our all time favorite pools. Designed for long afternoons in the sun and quiet moments of respite between two dueling summer houses.
Set at the quiet center of the estate, the pool anchors the broader landscape composition, balancing architecture, garden, and water into a single, cohesive experience.
Thoughtful seating, layered plantings, and a sense of symmetry create a space that feels both expansive and private.
This project reflects our approach to bespoke landscape architecture where resort-style amenities meet the restraint of a well-composed estate garden.
