Last winter I got to revisit one of my favorite characters in the Baymax shorts for Disney+. This alley scene had some interesting lighting challenges to get the sun hits where i wanted across the two areas of the shot. Using geometry masks, I was able to cut holes in. the model and get the sun to flood into the apartment in the second half. We wanted the beginning to have a high sun hit, then mostly lit with bounce so it would feel darker and more drab for where Yachi was coming from. As the shot transitions to the apartment, we wanted Yachi looking into a warm loving environment, wishing he could live somewhere like that.

At the beginning of Moana I came on the show early to help do some lighting tests. These are a few of those animation tests we did to show the Maui character, and R&D the ocean, ocean spray and wet look onto characters. We kept the lighting on the simple side with a nice sunny day and vibrant colors. A lot of my time was spent on the spray integration and color look of the simulation. We used an animated texture on the skin to fake the water dripping on characters which worked quite nicely and was adjustable. Working on this definitely got me excited for the show and also gave me a chance to work with Maui early on, for what would turn out to be a pretty iconic character.

A few years back I got to work on @jacobjfrey short film HOME. The story really grabbed me from his initial pitch as I could relate fully living across the country from my family. We had a few artistic challenges to come up with different looks of the changing seasons while achieving a more flat 2D stylistic look. It was a really fun experience for me being so use to 3D lighting. This bridge shot was one of my favorites. I played with some dappled light hitting the bridge and also used some Nuke tricks to make the water ripple but still feel painterly. It was fun keeping everything super flat but using ramps to direct the viewers eye. Thanks @jacobjfrey for the experience!

The naturalist club in Zootopia had some really fun challenges including a few shots where we really pushed the look and style of the frames to feel different from the rest of the film. We wanted to push Hopps shock as she is seeing the club in action for the first time by creating a special lut, pushing the saturation and blooms to heighten the fun of the images. I had a lot of fun with this one. I can watch it on loop over and over 🤣.

At the beginning of Moana they implented a new water simulation tool that required a lot of R&D between the lighting and fx depts. It was an intense few months but we were able to come up with some really beautiful looking oceans for the film. In this section baby Moana gets to play with the ocean. We had a test of this shot early on by another artist so it was challening to match what he had done with a different setup. You can see in my breakdown the numerous lighting steps and color changes that went into this final image.

Towards the end of Moana I had the amazing privilege of helping R&D the look of Te Ka. There were a bunch of challenges balancing the moving lava, fire, smoke and ashes of the character. We worked closely with the FX department and pulled together something pretty special in a really short time. These shots are a few of my favorites that I worked on along with a break down.

This was the first sequence I worked on for Encanto. We wanted to keep this area very mysterious as it showed the first encounter with Bruno. This was achieved by letting the image go super dark and playing with light leaking through the cracks of the casa and playing with volume to show the silhouettes of the characters. We also decided to let the hallway have a cool hue and contrast that with the warm light leaks coming from the casa which proved to be very successful. Fx added some falling dust that I integrated to help add to the dynamic nature of the scene. It was also important to hit the characters with bright hits of light at times to catch the animation moments that the directors felt were important to the viewer. This was a super fun sequence to work on.

For this sequence in Raya and the Last Dragon we spent a lot of time R&D’ing the rain look and also water dripping on surfaces. I always enjoy lighting sunset scenes because it automatically lends to a beautiful looking image. I decided to put the sun almost offscreen to the right is it would provide for nice shaping and back lighting. Also used a lens flare to really sell the sun hitting the lens. Thanks @ry.deyoung , the lens flare master, for teaching me some great tricks.

In "What Else Can I Do?" we had the challenge of integrating tons of colorful flowers that Isabela creates throughout the song into a sunset environment. This was very tricky to keep the shots from feeling busy and guiding the viewers eye to where we wanted to look. This was a fun area in Zootopia when Nick and Hopps are running from Bellwether in the museum. It was a dark scene where we got to play with silhouettes and the flash lights from the guards. I created some flares for the flash lights and used a few nuke tricks to animate the lights as the flare panned past the camera. The first clip is a quick breakdown of my light emissions that add to the final result. I was super lucky to work on Luisa's song in Encanto! This was one of my favorite sections with the Cerberus dogs. It was a fun challenge to match the art directors vision while combining fire/smoke elements around the colosseum. We went for a more theatrical look vs realistic to get the characters to pop and also help relate back to the song. The end shot we needed to help the transition into the next section of the song by blowing out the frame as Luisa decends down the crack in the ground.
