in lieu of a spotify wrapped, here are some albums i've purchased this past year. maybe (bandwidth willing) i'll write some Substack posts on them. one of them being a rare pressing of @kinggizzard that @herbs_mobile_records pointed me to when i was looking for a gift for my partner. @creeps_record_parlour has fueled my crate digging this year too, especially with owning more Aotearoa based music. while it's a privilege to be able to afford physical music consumption by today's standards, i implore you to use ethical streaming as a supplement to supporting artists more directly. there was a time when records was the standard, then cassettes, CDs, ipods / mp3 players, to what has now become all too easy access that musicians benefit near nothing from anymore. it's interesting, though, that it tends to be artists (you know, those who don't make much money) who support each other and own each others' work (paintings, albums, photos, sculptures, etc). one day i hope we can get back to some form of conscious exchange for art that isn't as opportunistic or over-consuming as it is now. thank you to fellow music nerds who have inspired me throughout the years. the come up crew teaching me to play on turntables. friends like @erickson03 who would spend a whole Record Store Day going around LA with me to find some gems and get my record store book signed by iconic establishments. record shops like Touch Vinyl (RIP) who let me practice my craft during open tables. @clogansrun and the heardrum eardrums, especially for providing me coffins to bring my turntables and records abroad with me. @radioactive.fm whānau like @tvdisko , @jewelschool88.6 and @georgeyoungnz who passed on some well loved and unbelievable treasures to me at record fairs. i love sharing the gift of music and i'm glad ive been able to pass it on to younger generations. if you are keen for some guidance on where to start your nerdome journey, be it spinning collecting or appreciating, get at me. let's stick it to these corporations and data manipulators together ✨ love to young stef who has been forever changed because of music and could never stop getting amongst it 🫶🏽

OH LOOK I'M POSTING MORE DJ CONTENT (who woulda thought 😅) a couple weekends ago i DJ'd a corporate party and it was a tiiiime! these gigs are a great challenge, and that's why i find them so fun to play. they come with a mixed bag crowd, which enables me to access a wider selection range. of course it can be a succession of top hits and nostalgic bangers, but i also find the longer format (3-4h+) a great opportunity to take the audience on a journey: how will i reel them in to dance, what tracks will bring in the wall flowers and the ones who throw their hands up at the drop of a drop, when will i give them a moment to breathe and grab a drink, then start it back up again... as always, there are the few that really fuck with what i'm doing and i'll cater to them for a bit. at some point i'll do a lil run for myself. if people like it, cool. if the dancefloor clears, no worries! it's called EXPERIMENTING. i'm told i look like I'm enjoying myself, which i believe is infectious! the audience isn't just on the dancefloor, there are always those vibing from afar too. sometimes, the first person i gotta hype is myself and that's always a given ✨ one thing i wish was more a thing is mixing with the last track off the previous DJ finishing their set, which is what i did (rather than them fading out or tech playing filler before the next DJ starts). i miss the true B2B format, feeding off each other and sharing the same aura. what a privilege to play for clients who treat DJ's right: proper sound checks, tech engineers, BOOTH MONITOR! i even got a green room and rider. rare, but man, if the arts were supported so that all artists and organizers were treated like rich folk... our gig spaces would be filled up with all kinds of good good! there's room for everyone and everything and i see kisses out there from some dope collectives! keep it going, whānau 🫶🏽 ••• pursuit of happiness [steve aoki] ➡️ murder on the dancefloor [colin jay] good graces [SC] ➡️ tokyo drift [teriyaki boyz] folded [suavez] ➡️ rich baby daddy [ballads] ••• #seratodj #pioneerdj #stefrose #openformatdj #cdj2000nexus #djma9 #djlife #corporategig

yee my new business cards came in! this is my nod to OG star shots picture trading (back in the day 👵🏽) when we handed them out at school and wrote notes to each other on the back. designing this really took me back! i channeled bb stef's handwriting and i even mimicked the back of photo paper. the photo is of my first EVER star shots shoot. if young stef could see me now they'd lose their shit that i've kept up this nostalgic tradition and think i'm cool heheh. come grab one or some this saturday at @sector22_ 's creative market! i'll be equipped with a photobooth featuring one of my classic backdrops. i'll have some stickers for sale as well. if you have yet to get the star shots experience, this will be a cute intro ✨ see you this weekend!

What if Te Reo Māori was the primary language spoken and embraced in Aotearoa? I can imagine beautiful possibilities. As tauiwi, I see migrants embracing local indigenous culture while also sharing our own in harmony with tangata whenua. how lovely it would be to learn and uplift each other in community without attempts to eradicate language or threats made against our identities! My latest release in this Solidarity Stickers series envisions space for this to exist. 'Kia pai te rā!" Have a good day! This sticker is a nod to immigrant retail shops and takeaways from various diasporas, but reimagined in Te Reo Māori (rather than assimilating to English), adorned with Aotearoa's native Pohutukawa. Proceeds will go to @utu_a_matimati , a takatāpui collective, that already provides such decolonised spaces through their mahi toi and conscious collaboration with migrant organisations.✨
