Proud to be part of this amazing project from @medina_greece the first of a kind for Greek rivers, that puts #sarantaporos and #aoos rivers closer to a #freeflowingrivers protected state. 🥾The days of #mapstream fieldwork were probably the most exciting and memorable of our lives, as we were witnessing the unique biodiversity of Sarantaporos basin and the rich culture of the villages and communities that surrounds it in our every step! 🌿A complex and rich environment in every aspect that needs more attention and local communal initiatives in order to thrive as it is, a vivid ecological and cultural tapestry. 👉/ . . . #damremoval #freeflowingrivers #medina #sarantaporos #aoos #mastorohoria #openmountain

Border Depositions is currently installed @tranzitsk in Bratislava as part of the Liminal Ecologies: Thresholds of Transition and Entanglement exhibition curated by @marianna.tsionki & @marianacunha___ (27/03-11/07/2025). Our multimedia installation examines the sedimentary politics of the Evros/Meriç/Maritsa river border between Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria. After a century of the river’s movements away from the demarcation of the border to its median line by the Lausanne Peace Treaty and Athens protocol (1923-1926) the Evros/Meriç has become an alluvial archive of border violence. Excerpts from our ongoing research are organised here into eight depositions reflecting the methods we have developed when confronted with the dynamic and deadly conditions of this weaponized river. Since 2018 we have conducted several field trips where we found ourselves, like other researchers and activists, restricted by a military buffer zone (ZAP). The ZAP obscures illegal pushbacks, the clandestine and forceful return of asylum seekers to islets and the Turkish river bank. With limited and insecure access new oblique ways of researching the border have become necessary. “Depositions” refers to both the sedimentary deposits – erosions and accretions – that form the shifting banks and islands that are folded into the border environment, as well as the legal depositions provided in the defence of the rights of asylum seekers. Each deposition responds to the river as an ecology of borders: digital, aural, atmospheric, botanical, discursive, and muddy. Sound plays an important role: a recording of interviews with asylum seekers and river scientists, a hydrophone recording of the flow of water, a fan used to blow teargas, each is a form of audio testimony to the violent conditioning of the river. Each deposition provides an example of the aggregative methodology we have found necessary to practice border abolition in a weaponized environment. A practice towards the deposing of the border as we approach the centenary of its demarcation. Graphic design by: @pinelo_pigardika Photo Credit: @_isonative

Join us TOMORROW, 12 December (18:00-20:00), at Framer Framed for the first two books of 𝘚𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘴 (@system.of.systems ) 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 series: 𝘖𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. 𝘚𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘴 is a research project that analyses the bureaucratic, spatial, and technological conditions shaping Europe's migration landscape. The themes of each edition will be discussed by three contributors: critical media scholar Ariana Dongus (@arianadongus ), spatial and visual researcher Stefanos Levidis (@stef_levidis ), and lecturer Hassan Ould Moctar, followed by a Q&A. ▪️ Sign up for the book launch → 🔗 IN BIO 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 explores the intricate web of migration management within and beyond Europe’s borders. Each publication begins with a theme or term to examine processes that restrict, surveil, or obscure displaced people. The first publication, 𝘖𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨, examines how the EU extends its borders beyond the continent by outsourcing border control. Recognising this practice within a historical trajectory of colonial ordering, it shows how responsibility is systematically deferred and how racist structures are propagated through border management. The second publication, 𝘌𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, offers a transhistorical perspective on contemporary border systems. The contributions explore extraction as a process that drives displacement, with enduring effects due to environmental devastation. They also examine extraction as a direct mechanism of border management that financially profits from those who are displaced. ▬▬▬ 𝘖𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 contributors: Border Violence Monitoring Network (@borderviolence ), FRAUD (@la_fraud ), Nadine El-Enany (@nadineelenany ), Hassan Ould Moctar. 𝘌𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 contributors: Ariana Dongus, Radha D’Souza (@dsouzaradha ), Stefanos Levidis, Angela Melitopoulos. 📷 Images/photos courtesy of 𝘚𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘴
