Recently found these old pictures of when we visited Garrett in Philadelphia and got to see the actual original Steadicams he invented! The first being basically a handheld crane and then the original trapezoid sled with the fiber optic eyepiece and built-in camera, used to make the famous showreel, that would become the Model 1. incredible bit of film history!
30 years ago The Music Factory (TMF) started in an ancient converted theatre shared with two radio stations. A little TV station that took on MTV with a small group of insanely hard working talent in front and behind the camera.
I joined in the second week and became a regular camera operator for many years! It was some of the wildest times of my life, proper rock and roll as we tried to figure out how to make TV. I still miss those days often.
From private acoustic concerts of Bon Jovi to Pink throwing up after gorging on bitterballs, many nightclubs and concerts and award shows, my own fan club, and so much more. All with a small group of dedicated incredible human beings who I still love dearly. I wish I had more pictures of that time but this is all I could find sadly. Raising a glass to you today! But of Steadicam history for you. From the early Steadicam 35, with built-in camera, to what we have now it’s fascinating to me how little has actually changed
Sure, we now have tons of cool contraptions to make our lives easier, and we perfected the art of operating it, but the basic physics are exactly as they were all those years ago. The original Steadicam is just as “steadi” as the latest and greatest! To me this is a testament to how brilliant the invention, and the inventor, are.
When Garrett Brown came up with this thing I doubt he could’ve known what an impact it would have on the industry and on the lives of those who lug this thing around all day. He’s still every bit as humble, and fortunately no longer considering a career in folk music.
As I was born in the same year the Steadicam was invented, and I’m rapidly approaching my own birthday, I feel a particular bond with this heavy piece of kit and it still thrills me to see the beautiful things that are done with it by my esteemed colleagues, old and new. I can’t wait to see more! Thanks Garrett. Not just for inventing the Steadicam but for inventing the operator ❤️

Still not fully recovered from our amazing trip to LA, was incredible catching up with so many wonderful people I hadn’t seen in years. From Chris Haarhoff to Rob Vuona, Rochelle, Jerry, Jessica, the infamous Neal Bryant, the list goes on! and of course Garrett himself. So many hugs! I hated leaving so quickly because there were so many more people I wanted to catch up with but I’ll be back out west soon!

This year the Steadicam celebrates its 50th anniversary! A machine that changed the industry and brought so many of us together by creating an entirely new art to master. All because one man had the genius idea that there must be a more elegant way to move a camera through space!
The Steadicam has changed a lot through the years but at the same time has also stayed the same, it still requires passion and practice to perfect the skill to operate it and I think that challenge is what attracted a lot of us to it, along with a love of storytelling.
I’ve gathered some random pictures of my gear through the years, it still thrills me to see this machine working and I love seeing others use it so by all means share yours too!
So all hail the Knights of the Green Screen and cheers to all my beautiful brothers and sisters dumb enough to strap on 60+lbs of weight and run after talent for a living! Happy birthday Steadicam, you don’t look a day over 20 ❤️
