Photographic print on linen with installation
Work presented at the INNOCENTES show
curated by @redexpanse@_red_lebanese_@pablojomaron in New York
This work explores the tradition of the quinceañera in Cuba the celebration of a girl’s fifteenth birthday, marking the symbolic passage from childhood to womanhood
At the center of the installation is an archival photograph of my sister, printed on linen. On the image, the face of my former cavalier is crossed out with pen an intimate yet universal gesture: crossing out people in photographs when they have hurt us, betrayed us, or left without saying goodbye
The installation is composed of relics from this important birthday celebration: objects, decorations, and fragments of a night where the young girl becomes the center of attention
A night that can remain both forgotten and unforgettable a beautiful memory, or one that turns into catastrophe
In a single evening, the little girl becomes a woman.
A passage. A memory. The beginning of another life.
