We’ve reached the midpoint of the 2026 PLA Youth Fellowship and marked it with a road trip to Reading, PA, where I grew up.
As we’ve move through the fellowship, we keep coming back to the threads that connect us. Staff to youth. Past to present. Story to story. The ways we are interconnected show up through real people, real places, and lived experience.
We started at
@GoggleWorks , right around the corner from my childhood home and across the street from where two of my best friends lived. Our Artist in Residence,
@TheronCookArt , gave the youth a tour and shared how he was part of visioning the center as a young artist over 20 years ago. Today, it stands as the largest interactive arts center in the country.
From there, we went to Barbey’s Park, where the youth met my childhood friends.
@ElLindo0o , now a social worker, spoke about sexual health education and what it means to return home and serve your community.
Theron shared the story behind the mural at the park and how he collaborated with my homie
@strokesforthefolks , who engaged in the project as a way to reconnect with the community.
My brother
@sameprojectdiffdesign shared his wisdom. We’ve been locked in for over 20 years, but it started right there at Barbey’s, with me showing off, slapping his hand away, then following him home to apologize.
Six years ago, when my wife and I were minutes away from losing our first home, he showed up for us. He always has. Because of him, my family has a stable roof over our heads. The youth got to witness what real community care looks like.
And all of this happened in the same park where we grew up around gun violence. Where we had to duck when shots rang out.
We continued through the city, taking in more of Theron’s murals, then headed to
@UnrealCustomDesigns , where the youth created shirts and mugs using artwork from the fellowship.
We ended at the Pagoda, overlooking the city.
Bringing our whole selves into the work of liberation is the intention. Our stories. Our people. Where we come from.
