You make a BIG difference every day. This Allied Health Week, we honour, recognize and celebrate the vital contributions of allied health staff across St. Boniface Hospital and Manitoba’s healthcare system. With many disciplines and thousands of professionals, allied health teams play a critical role in delivering preventive, diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitative care across the full patient journey. From occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech language pathologists, recreation and social workers to laboratory, pharmacy, and diagnostic professionals, allied health staff are essential members of interdisciplinary teams and are integral to patient flow, recovery, and overall care experience. At SBH, allied health staff are key partners in interdisciplinary care. Their expertise directly contributes to reducing length of stay, preventing complications, supporting safe transitions, and improving outcomes for the patients and families we serve. Ron Paley was a cardiac patient at St. Boniface Hospital [tag], where his nurse caught a critical kidney issue at a pre-op appointment. ⁠ ⁠ “She said, ‘You’re in serious trouble, Ron. Your kidneys are about to fail’,” he remembered. ⁠ ⁠ He was rushed into care, but on the first night his heart rate fell dangerously low. “They called a Code Blue, cardiac arrest,” he said. ⁠ ⁠ But his team brought him back from the edge. Within days, Ron recovered enough to proceed with surgery. ⁠ ⁠ “Everyone who cared for me was friendly, helpful, and caring.
