It’s been a journey for Antoine Semenyo… as a kid, he was rejected by Arsenal, Tottenham, Millwall, and Crystal Palace’s academies. In his own words, he was a late developer. He was “small and chunky” - he was technically good, but physically not where he needed to be. He joined Dave Hockaday’s college youth academy program where Hockaday got him super fit and he exploded from there. At 17 he was eventually signed by Bristol City’s academy… he played lots of non-league and lower EFL football, getting stronger and more conditioned to deal with senior football. Eventually signed by Bournemouth for £10m in 2023. The rest is history.
Apart from being a super talented, two footed player, he’s also a physical specimen. We know from the research that up to 50% of Academy players in the UK alone leave the system before they’re 16. The majority of early developers are selected for contracts. The late developers get left behind. But now imagine how many technically gifted footballers are still out there, playing in non-league or regional football who have fully matured, but just not at the physical levels needed to play higher up the leagues. Look at his data from this season 📈
The standard of coaching is so high at academy level these days, there must be so many players still playing who’ve got the ability to move up the levels and are as yet “undiscovered”… Antoine Semenyo, Ollie Watkins, Tyrone Mings, James Tarkowski, Max Kilman, Ethan Pinnock, Dan Burn, Solly March, Jamie Vardy, Jared Bowen… they all followed this path. Not every football journey is linear. You have to keep going, keep doing the right things, and believe in your ability.
