“Tackling Transformation: interrogating adaptive reuse in the EU” a conversation between architect and professor An Fonteyne @noaarchitecten , Josiane Schmidt of @station.plus @bplus.xyz both based at ETH Zurich @ethzurich , Valérie Vermandel @valerie_vermandel from investors Whitewood Belgium @whitewood_benelux as well as Ruth Schagemann @ruth_schagemann from the Federal Chamber of German Architects with KoozArch founder Federica Zambeletti @zambesmile . Addressing the growing discourse around adaptive reuse, this revealing exchange gathers stakeholders from design, finance and politics to debate its viability — with a focus on Brussels, de facto capital of the EU. Joining this conversation are Valérie Vermandel from development investors Whitewood Belgium, Ruth Schagemann from the Federal Chamber of German Architects as well as architect and professor An Fonteyne and Josiane Schmidt of station.plus, both based at ETH Zurich.  This conversation builds upon the publication “Designing Incentives for Change: ETH Zürich and the Holcim Foundation Fellowship” which anticipated the Fellowship programme back in May. The transformation of the large-scale former Citroën garage into one of Europe’s largest cultural institutions, programmes only part of the complex and opens half as public space to the city, proving that adaptive reuse can create spatial generosity and openness that no new construction could achieve. © Holcim Foundation Slide 05 - The Holcim Foundation Fellows and team visit the construction site of OXY, a large-scale transformation in the heart of Brussels’ historical center currently undertaken by Whitewood. © Holcim Foundation.

“Designing Incentives for Change: ETH Zürich and the Holcim Foundation Fellowship”, a conversation by KoozArch founder Federica Zambeletti @zambesmile with Laura Viscovich and Saba Meidany of the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction @holcim_foundation , together with Olaf Grawert @olafgrawert and Arno Brandlhuber — architects and co-initiators of @station.plus chair at ETH Zürich @arch.ethz as well as the ambitious and ongoing action, HouseEurope! @houseeurope.eu Industry concerns and architectural ambition are often at loggerheads; the former seemingly constraining the latter. This conversation anticipates the Holcim Foundation Fellowship ‘Design Incentives for Change’, which will unfold later this year in Brussels. The call for applications is currently open until May 19, 2025. To apply, visit holcimfoundation.org/fellowship/europe-brussels-2025 Read the full conversation on koozarch.com!
