We’ve had a ton of new faces around here so wanted to take a moment to introduce ourselves. STATE can be a hard thing to sum up - we make clothes, things for your house, we take crazy trips, are constantly experimenting and reinventing ourselves, we love color and pattern and chaos, we’re scrappy and original, and wouldn’t trade any of it for a second. I guess it’s a brand, but we think of it as a way to live. 💫Welcome to our world.💫Glad you’re here.

We live for photoshoots.
In the 15 years we’ve been making clothes at STATE, the shoots are where the magic comes from. And it’s less about making pretty images, and more about creating a MEMORY. Assembling a series of variables: location, people, activities, outfits; and seeing what results.
And while it may look fancy (does it?! did we fool you??) it’s really just us, a few friends, scrappy cameras, snacks, and long days of having good ol’ fashioned fun. We’ve borrowed boats from our little brother, bikes from our mom, had strangers hold clotheslines, and somehow made it all look good enough to send out into the world. Grab your passports! ✈️ next week STATE is headed on our first overseas “work trip” and we’re about to explode. Our multi-purpose trip has us taking to Portugal for meet with some of the lovely factories we’ve been working with, exploring Porto, and then heading to the island of Madeira - a place I’ve dreamed of visiting for 20 years when I found this 👆incredible map at a book sale and have carried it everywhere since. ✨ Of course we couldn’t stop ourselves and designed an entire collection around the inspiration for the trip and this map itself, and are bringing along our two BFFs to ensure it is the most epic international girls trip and photo shoot ever. I’M DYING. 💓 So we need recs! Most beautiful parks, coolest shops? Hot Porto bars for a night out? Best food? Madeira spots not to miss? Tell us everything.
A match made in heaven. Hand painted stripes on a cotton gauze skirt. With pockets! The skirt could last you the rest of your life and you would still get compliments to the very end. 🧟♀️💅Like for real. ✨And the top is a digital print of a piece of marbled paper that I made with my daughter at her 8th birthday party (a marbling party!) that literally no one cared about but me, and we made one nice piece of marbled paper together, and they all ran off to play. Lol. But the one piece of paper was so damn good, we’ve made multiple STATE textiles out of it!! Like this tank top that is truly the only kind of top I want to wear when it’s hot out. 👌soooo, I guess it wasn’t all a wash. But next time I throw a marbling party, I’m going to invite you guys and not a bunch of eight-year-olds. ✅
Took the Railroad Jumper for a day-to-night spin recently and it was a 5 star day. These roomy overalls are so fun to whip into outfits, and I honestly could have kept going! Thankful for good friends, work I love, and a friend with a convertible in this weather. 🌞🕶️Our Jumpers are made to order in our Athens GA studio.

I sent a newsletter piece out on Friday about the best email I’ve ever received. It was ten years ago, from a girl named Abby. I tried to talk her out of it, but started as an intern driving 3 hours to work in my garage. And over the last ten years she’s become far more than just my business partner. She’s my sounding board, my co-conspirator, the person who takes my wildest ideas seriously and somehow helps make them real. We’ve laughed through so much, survived some hard seasons, and built a very strange little world I could never have imagined alone. All because she sent an email.
She’s also the only person I know who can discuss designer ant farms, hand-painted kites, and a massage chair rental kiosk as serious business alternatives in the same afternoon. We always say if STATE disappeared tomorrow, we’d just start something else together.
She quietly holds so much of this together, avoids the spotlight at all costs, and works harder than anyone I know. This whole experiment would not exist without her. Ten years is a long freaking time. I love you Abs
Speaking of the shirts, we live in — THIS ONE. 🥰As comfy as your favorite vintage tee, but as colorful as your wacky aunt’s sofa*. We made this print on a lark, and have been in love with it ever since. Named Punchflower for a reason 🌸🥊 *are WE the wacky aunts?? I think we may be….
