We are back open on Thursday the 8th after our month of a rest attempt. Starter Bread reopened last Sunday after their 2 week break. Rest has become a target at which you take aim and expect to miss. Instead of breaks filled with month long road trips - it’s now listening to endless Beethoven, getting sick 3 times in six weeks and watching my son learn to walk. Truly, it’s even better (minus the sick)
Matt and I took this photo shortly after opening the shops. I can’t even remember what it was for now. It feels crazy that we are closing in on completing 3 years in this space, most days it still feels brand new. So much has changed from then to now; friends have opened places, friends have closed spaces and ya know tiny things like massive economic and societal instability and having a 15 month old child. It is a constant challenge to reorient yourself with how you want to run the business and the business that is actually running in the present.
But we push on and with every reopening there is always some new excitement. This year it comes, most excitingly, the return of Josephine from her worldy travels. Very few people in my life have challenged me, supported me and inspired me to the level that she has. (Although I’ve been pretty dang lucky with everyone that works at Gracie’s). And if she brings one thing, for sure, it’s energy. This year we are going to channel that into more events, classes, and workshops.
Thanks as always for coming along for the ride. Gracie’s is a neighborhood place run on neighborhood support. We look forward to seeing all your faces again soon!

Our roast chicken, a Mary’s half bird, wet brined and dry brined. Rubbed with garlic and rosemary, roasted until it’s crispy, served with @starterbread toasted in olive oil and rubbed with garlic and a picholine olive salad and a zingy sauce ravigote. The crown jewel of this dish is this @pipsqueakportland garlic confit 🧄💋.

🏜️Autumn’s in full swing on chaos planet and I’m calling it - it’s the year of the vest! And if you’ve been paying attention, the year of the (wild) west! But by wild I mean some cowfolk finally ate those mushrooms they found growing on their ranch and lost their mind in order to find their heart. They shrugged off their smelly colonizer ideas, visibly-mended those ol’ wranglers & took off toward the sunset on the back of a star-faced Appaloosa to find themselves immersed in a matriarchal village of earth-loving peace. A place of home baked bread, foraged chanterelles, preserved flowers, left leaves, hinoki baths and Oaxacan altar candles.
Yeah, this is that!

Things got a little GOTHIC. Being a tourist in my own city is fun! Ventured up to St. John’s for some yummy @starterbread and made my way to Cathedral Park. Then on my way home I hit up @oldfriendscoffeepdx for a matchagado! Soft serve ice cream is always a good idea! What a lovely fall day!
