Shiloh’s given name was Boogie – it captured him really well, honestly. He was always dancing in spite of the chaos around him. The one time he didn’t try to wiggle away was when I brought him back to my apartment for the first time, fresh off of a van from Texas. He froze at the sight of an elevator so I carried him up the stairs instead. He has carried me in turn, in every imaginable way, since.
He was my bravery, my patience, my curiosity, my levity, my ferocity. Without him I feel hacked to pieces.
Shiloh was the love of my life and the drummer of the beat of my heart – my son, my champion, my confidante, my best friend. He was a raucous and wily protector who would nip anyone who came near me if I even smelled of sadness or uncertainty. He was naughty but he was perfect. I love you Shiloh, every day, as much today as the day I finally get to see you again. I love you.
