Starting with a mass-produced, “Made in China” souvenir bust of George Washington (a replica of the neoclassical original), I’ve been recasting and manipulating the form using clay sourced only from within the United States. I have about 300 made, with a lofty goal of atleast a 1,000. With the goal that none are the same.The irony is intentional: bringing the American icon materially home to be reinvented. By repeating the form, the multiple becomes a tool for revealing slippage of meaning, and of national myth. As part of the @tyler_foundations 3D Principles course, students learn essential sewing techniques including soft sculpture basics. For their sewing machine demo project, they designed and created these awesome, functional aprons! So proud of the work they put in.Looking forward to the next prompt: Soft Monuments!
