The reframing of the Sarah Flower Adams hymn follows the previous album’s strategy of using the length of an album side to meditate on loss. Inspired by composer and percussionist Brian Blade’s brief, hymnodic meditations, here courthouse explores questions of remembrance, loss, and the felt need to linger inside a familiar, ancestral melody in a nostalgic search for anodynes. The overlapping performances of the traditional melody come and go like the tide, simulating different camera angles and suggesting a Rashomon-like investigation of the accuracy and integrity of perspective and memory.

“Vihangi” is an ode to young Vihangi Patel, an 11-year-old girl who died alongside her family crossing the Canada-US border on foot in the harsh midwestern winter. The track features courthouse’s trademark use of effects and deployment of rich reverbs to conjure the audible past, a realm containing not only gramophones, films, and typewriters but the spectral, celestial whispers of departed loved ones and landscapes.

I moved out west after grad school in Maine to take a job that paid more than anything I could find. 16/hr + housing to walk the Uintah Basin for 10+ hrs a day in search of endangered cacti and other flora & fauna. Shot on a 35mm Minolta

Created during one of the longest winters on record and culled from a drip of basement tapes, my video for James & the Giants’ “hall of mirrors” was released yesterday.

I’ve been fortunate enough to collaborate with James on a number of projects over the years and feel very fortunate every time. It’s always good to step out of the non-fiction realm and into the art form that has informed so much of what I do. (I’m sure my tapes of 120 minutes still exist somewhere). Although that world resembles an electrified corpse these days, I still hope to make something half as good as Spike or Michel at some point.
