I showed my work for the first time ever with @nommohouse ! Forever grateful for the opportunity to stand alongside so many amazing artists, to tell ppl a little more about myself through my sculpture, and to see everyone engage w it <3 super thankful for my support system :)
I promised myself when I lost my Grama Nita back in 2022 that I’d work through my grief with art, and I don’t feel I truly accepted it until I had time w myself to learn a new material last year. She kept wicker baskets around her home from her travels and I wanted to make one of my own (that prioritized form > function), and felt this was a great opportunity to honor her by including pictures of her and some of her things. She was a daughter, sister, student, mother, secretary, and world traveler before she was my Grama and I miss her so much.
on acceptance (basket frame 001 and lid)
hot-rolled steel, hand-weaved tie wire, 2025-2026.
the fruits of my labor! I enjoyed picking up welding this summer and loved the inner time and escape the process gave me. after the result of my first session (slide 10), I’ve decided to stick with baskets and abstract sculptures :)
slide 1 (right to left) = frames of Christmas gifts 🤭
slide 2 = the bianca (for Bianca)! revisiting this when I sign up for another session
slide 3 = frame 003 for my dad that was turned into a sculpture for his yard (finished product not pictured)
slide 4-6 = frame 004 for E <3 weaved with tie wire and sprayed with hammered metal spray (slide 6)
slide 7-9 = frame 002 for my mum. also weaved with tie wire!
Nine weeks of welding in review :) started the frame of my “wicker” basket and felt so free! Once I finish the lid in the fall, I will take it home to weave with wire (considering other materials too), continue my research on basket weaving (thinking about Gullah Geechee traditions here), and start on a smaller basket lol🤗
week 028-030 - thinking about the worlds I’ve been immersed in lately, and recent time spent w loved ones. sitting w the skills I’m developing, and feeling content working w a material that gives grace!
