Weeks posts
Life has been a bit of a madness these last weeks and as such I haven’t even found the time to post something incredibly humble about winning my third BAFTA, and the amazing Scam Interceptors’ second daytime BAFTA in three years. It is absolute lunacy that our show which started as five people in a meeting room in BBC Scotland with a laptop, a monitor and two cameras is now a two-time BAFTA winner. It is testament to the absurdly talented team behind it that this little thing has become such a widely loved and critically appreciated hit. From the front to the back it’s a production staffed by some of the most skilled and committed folk I’ve ever worked with. Thank you so much for bringing me on this wonderful ride with you all, and for becoming my close friends. From a personal perspective, it’s of course been a rough few years. The professional achievements are wonderful, and I am really very proud indeed of what we’ve achieved, but there is no point in pretending that losing both your parents youngish isn’t horribly painful and sad. It has a profound effect on your outlook on life, your perspective of what matters most, everything. I am lucky to be supported by an incredibly strong and loving wife and great mates - no idea how I would have got through this without you all. Now I’ve got three I feel like I can give one away, so mum and dad, that BAFTA was for you.

How many posts is too many about winning a BAFTA? You’re going to have to accept two, I’ve got people to thank. I just burst with happiness and pride every time I remember what just happened. It’s the one of the best nights of my life and a long held dream for many of us who work in television. I feel unbelievably lucky that I get to work on #ScamInterceptors. It’s an incredibly important show, on an incredibly important topic, doing something journalistically which had never been done before on TV. Without our magnificent team, who somehow make the often intensely stressful experience of making it feel light and fun, so much so that I look forward to every day we do it, I’d be nowhere. Some important shoutouts: Rowland, the exec who made it happen and called me first, Sherry for being the most incredibly calm boss, who trusts me like no other and keeps us all on track always, @ravwilding for guiding me and making my first presenting experience seem remarkably normal and easy, @thatmarkjames and @harleennottay who are the most fantastic crew to hang with in the hub every day, always there with the right thought at the right time, and just a gigantic pleasure off screen as well, @odingillies for taking the show to new heights with his attention for visual detail, artful eye and willingness to be camera on shoulder 8hrs a day for 9 weeks every year! Not to mention the rest of the series 2 hub crew like research demon @alicefharp , @flynnpanzee and Wayne who I can’t find on here right now. You’re all BAFTA winners too. I also can’t forget the unseen heroes of the edit like my dream edit partner @cassiedurham001 , Dagmar, @mrs_ruth_gallacher , Mark Murray, @spoffe , Dylan, just an unbelievably good set of storytellers who manage not to lose their minds despite our insane data output making the show. And Street Post for not crumbling under the weight of it. And last but not least, @rachellplatt for having the guts to commission such a crazy idea. I love you all - working with you is the greatest pleasure of my professional life. We did the telly treble!

On today’s Morning Live, I spoke about victim blaming around scams and why we must reframe the conversation to remove shame from the subject. It isn’t just damaging and hurtful to those who have already experienced a scam, it’s damaging to those of us who say “how could they be so stupid?” as well because it makes us complacent to the possibility it could happen to us. This issue is so important, I dedicated the final chapter of my book, “How to Beat Scammers” to it. I wanted it to be the lasting impression any reader took away. The book is an investigative deep dive into the social and cultural history of scams across the world, as well as a library of every scam I know about. Of course, there are so many scams out there, by the time it’s out there will be probably be many hundreds of new ones, so I developed a system to help you identify them, called “Tells”. If you read this thing cover to cover, I am certain you will be better protected against scam approaches of all kinds. How to Beat Scammers is available for pre-order now from Waterstones and Amazon and will be released on February 13th. Please get one for your family and anyone else you think would benefit.

Did I successfully trick my scammer into giving up real personal info by bringing up football? Are you #hungarian? Or from #győr even? Is his accent legit? #podcast #scam #hungary

With the help of @dangleeballsscambaiter I’ve been looking into the @tiktok adverts for jobs making handicrafts which are targeting users in the UK. Making pens? Getting paid? How can that be a scam? #Scam #job #work #advice #uk
