“Butt Stuff” I’ve officially made it through my first colonoscopy! A personal achievement, given that my ability to self-clench is nonexistent! The procedure went well and my doc said my a**hole looks great! I’ll totally take the compliment. He and his team performed the 45 min. procedure on Friday and removed five teeny polyps, which is common. So now I can add amputee to my resumé. According to the American Cancer Society, incidents in colorectal cancer have nearly doubled for adults under age 50. It’s the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. But it’s highly preventable when detected early. Your first colonoscopy is recommended at age 45 and most health insurance companies will cover the procedure. So get your ass into the butt doctor! I was highly motivated after seeing the film ANDRÉ IS AN ADIOT @andreisanidiotfilm at Sundance. It’s a poignant portrait of a man documenting his death. It’s beautiful. It’s funny. And it’s a motivator for getting cancer screenings. Originally, I had planned to do the colonoscopy prep at the hospital. I’d hoped to work with my care team to get admitted, cleaned out and rushed over for the exam. That didn’t happen because of all the reasons you’d expect with our current health care system. Prepping for a colonoscopy isn’t easy. But my goal is to continue to fight for patients with disabilities’ rights to have their colonoscopy prep done under the supervision of a health care provider. It’s being done in other parts of the country, but not in Utah. This needs to change. Until then… and for those of you with spinal cord injuries or other complex disabilities, don’t let the challenges of filling your body with heroic amounts of laxatives stop you from getting a colonoscopy. Just purchase plenty of towels and plastic bags, make sure you have a good book or audio playlist, and be sure you’re watching your skin whilst sitting on the porcelain throne. It’s worth it!
