If you don’t know him already, it’s a true pleasure to introduce @ssflyfish from @grandtetonflyfishing ! Most agree he’s one of the best and most knowledgeable guides and anglers around. The Fish Camp team is grateful Scott was able and willing to share his experience and thought processes around the topic of targeting fish in shallow areas of stillwaters! Shout out to @grandtetonflyfishing guide @sawyerfin for joining and providing some great info as well. You can find the full Stillwater Fishing: Targeting Shallows masterclass over at the Fish Camp website (link is in the Fish Camp bio).

Sharing a fly fishing experience with family is what it's all about! I've always believed that this sport is an amazing catalyst for travel and if you're lucky or crazy enough to hire a guide on occasions, there's not a better way to immerse yourself in the local culture and feel the flora and fauna up close. We recently had a quick getaway to some old stomping grounds in the Florida panhandle and some stars aligned. We were greeted with EPIC fall weather and a thoughtful, precise and fishy guide to show us some saltwater fun, thanks again Patrick! @slow_and_low

@ssflyfish from @grandtetonflyfishing shares a quick tip on fly selection, fly choice and patience - Don’t Overreact! If a SINGLE fish refuses your fly, don’t overreact and assume you need to change flies right away. Could you present the fly better? Should you lighten your tippet? Be confident in your fly and consider other factors as well. Now, if you start to get multiple refusals after solid presentations, THEN it may be time to switch up the fly. If you find this info valuable and/or interesting, check out Scott Smith’s full masterclass on Stillwaters: Targeting Shallows that will be available at the Fish Camp website (www.fishcamp.life) starting November 24, 2025.

Fishing shallow areas of lakes and reservoirs can be a sight fisher’s dream. The whole process from finding fish, casting to fish and hopefully getting them to eat is all visual. @ssflyfish from @grandtetonflyfishing shares some general pointers for getting started with the right fly line and leader set-ups for these scenarios. Note there are many variables that contribute to choosing the best line and leader set-ups for targeting stillwater shallows, so this video serves as an ideal starting point. Be sure to check Scott’s full masterclass on Shallow Water Stillwater fishing that will be available on the Fish Camp website (see the link in the Fish Camp bio) in November of 2025.
