Potential Contraceptive Shortage in Nepal Due to Funding Cuts!! Nepal may soon face a shortage of contraceptives as both government and international funding have declined significantly. The Ministry of Health has reduced its budget allocation for contraceptives from NPR 25 crore to NPR 17 crore for the upcoming fiscal year. At the same time, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has decreased its annual financial support from $3.2 million to $1.06 million. Although health facilities currently have some stock available, officials caution that these supplies may not be sufficient for long. Past shortages of contraceptive methods such as Depo-Provera injections, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and condoms have been linked to procurement delays, reduced funding, and the suspension of support from USAID. Public health experts warn that prolonged shortages could lead to an increase in unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions. Data from UNFPA indicate that nearly half of all pregnancies in Nepal are unintended, and approximately two thirds of these end in abortion. Each year, around 100,000 women access abortion services at legal health facilities, though the actual number is likely higher. According to the National Demographic and Health Survey 2022, about 21% of married women in Nepal still have unmet needs for family planning. Furthermore, the demand for contraceptives is increasing, particularly following funding reductions to private organizations. This situation raises serious concerns about Nepal’s capacity to sustain free and accessible reproductive health services. #contraceptivecrisis #PublicHealth #limitedfunding

Dr. Biraj Tandukar, our National Safe Choice Facilitator from Bagmati Province, highlights that misinformation can lead to fear, stigma, and unsafe practices. When people lack accurate information, they may delay seeking care, rely on unsafe methods, or avoid health services altogether putting lives at risk. Access to correct, evidence based information is essential to protect health, uphold rights, and ensure safe choices for all. #safeabortion #srjdocs #reproductivehealth #endstigma #healthforall

Doctors for Sexual and Reproductive Justice ✊🇳🇵 Dr Amit, Rijan and Rakshya are the small team at the heart of @srjdocs , based in Kathmandu, Nepal. Since receiving a SAAF grant in 2025 they have already formally registered as an independent organisation and started training medical professionals across the country to deliver stigma-busting workshops on abortion rights to their colleagues. Though Nepal has a liberal #abortion law on paper, stigma and providers’ attitudes can still be a barrier and @srjdocs wants to see services actually become accessible for all. 💙 #safeabortion #abortionishealthcare #SRJDocs

What are the legalities regarding abortion and why do so many still not know them? Dr. Bipana Kunwar from Lumbini Province breaks it down, highlighting how gaps in awareness continue to limit access to safe and legal services. When knowledge reaches people, it empowers choice, protects health, and ensures no one is left navigating their reproductive decisions in the dark and the rights mean very little if people aren’t informed about them.💛 #srjdocs #doctorsnetwork #safeabortion

His perspective highlights the importance of timely, safe, and supportive reproductive healthcare for everyone as every individual deserves the right to make informed choices about their own body without risking their health or well-being with optimum access to services.💛
