Day 20 - Sweta Ravisankar
@sr_swe
Sweta Ravisankar is a Bharatanatyam practitioner and educator with a Masters in Fine Arts and a PhD in Developmental Biology. With 30+ years of performance and 14 years of teaching experience, she mentors students at
@skndanceco . Rooted in traditional lineages, her work bridges classical rhythms with contemporary narratives like mental and women’s health.
1. What/Who do you consider as your community?
My community is a multifaceted landscape. Rooted in the South Asian diaspora, my "closest home" is my dance class, where students and families form an intimate kinship. Recently, I’ve found deep respect and connection within Portland’s broader artist community, integrating my classical practice into the city’s diverse creative fabric.
2. What kind of world are you building?
I am building a world where the storytelling and rhythm of Bharatanatyam honor tradition while "shaking hands" with contemporary ideas. Through my performances and teaching across generations (ages 5–50), I create space for honest conversations, empowering students to think independently and grow as artists and deeply empathetic, compassionate humans.
3. What does "prosperity" and/or "growth" mean to you?
Growth must be a movement toward love, humanity, and empathy. Prosperity is no longer just for the individual; it must be built as a community. I believe arts, music, and dance lead us there. Compassion and empathy are the fundamental "atoms" that must become our highest collective priority.
April 26th denotes the first day of 250 days left in 2026. The "Portland 250 Artist Project" highlights one artist from our Portland region, everyday through the end of 2026. This project makes visible the artists, creatives, and culture bearers who are the lifeblood of community joy, vibrance, safety and resilience!
Artists are critical stakeholders in our region's civic health. Join this journey with me and 250 community artists who create thought provoking work that fuel our culture and enliven our collective well-being.
