Jason L. Ford moves with intention, grounded in both creativity and purpose. A writer and performer at his core, he uses his voice to engage people in a way that invites reflection and thought.
Portraits of Black Men: Becoming is a Journey of Stories narrative experience centered on Black men and their stories of becoming, captured through portraiture in moments of presence, deep reflection, and motion.
There’s a clarity in what drives him. His work is not just about expression, it’s about building. Creating platforms, supporting artists, and contributing to something that can sustain itself over time. His focus stays connected to community, to culture, and to making sure others have space to be seen and heard.
As an author, his writing invites conversation. It encourages people to look closer at history, at society, and at the role they play within it. Nothing about it feels surface level. It’s meant to open something up. He is becoming.
At the center of it all is legacy. As a father, that responsibility is personal. It shapes how he moves, how he creates, and what he leaves behind. Everything connects back to purpose, to alignment, and to using what he has in a way that gives something back. He is becoming.
Becoming:
“Alignment with destiny. Using your energy to give back and recognizing that your light shapes what comes next.” -Jason L. Ford
Portrait Location:
Detroit People’s Food Co-Op. A space rooted in community, where his work and presence continue to connect to something larger than himself.

One of the few takeaways celebrants were able to receive at the 37th Annual Damon J. Keith Soul Food Luncheon was that food security is not a personal failure, it's a government and systems failure.
For example, late last year, the USDA canceled its 30-year Household Food Security Report, the nation's most consistent measure of food security among low-income households. Think: who benefits from the absence of this knowledge? This decision has significant implications for how we understand these systems, their faults, and the impact of living in a capitalistic, colonized food world.
While there were plenty of smiles going around during this momentous occasion, the work to ensure everyone is fed with culturally-relevant, locally-governed, nutritious and organic food in the city continues.
Thank you to the Soul Food Luncheon Committee; Host Ericka Aiken-Adams, Esq.; Keynote Speaker john a. powell; and the community of dignitaries, leaders, and institutions who anointed us with this iconic award. Our 20th Anniversary is just getting started!

This past Thursday, the Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network was awarded the 37th Annual Damon J. Keith Soul and Spirit Humanitarian Award.
The annual Damon J. Keith Soul Food Luncheon is a special celebration of the African American experience, honoring outstanding African Americans who embodied the belief that Black history is living history.
Judge Keith was a legendary African-American federal jurist and civil rights icon who served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the Eastern District of Michigan, and once famously ruled, "Democracy dies behind closed doors."
By receiving this honor, DBCFSN joins a prestigious legacy of Soul and Spirit Humanitarian Award recipients, including icons like Rosa Parks, Aretha Franklin, Congressman John Conyers, and Mayor Coleman A. Young.
Thank you to the Soul Food Luncheon Committee, keynote speaker john a. powell, and the community of dignitaries, leaders, and institutions who presented this award and joined us in celebration. Our 20th Anniversary is just getting started!
