My first poster based on the beautiful illustrations in The Book of Wizard Parties. â¨
This book is perhaps only slightly second to The Book of Wizard Craft (2001), in my personal ranking of books that most inspired me as a young artist.Â
Written by Janice Eaton Kilby and published in 2002 by Lark Books, The Book of Wizard Parties has incredible paintings by Marla Baggetta (@mbaggetta ).
As a kid, I absolutely loved the world of the book.Â
It is such a good example of the grounded yet opulent escapism I associate with childrenâs fantasy. Each page is simultaneously impossible and yet absolutely aspirational, especially in the eyes of a 10 year old. It always made me wish I had a bunch of friends so I could have put on big, exuberant parties.Â
To this day, I love these sorts of magical craft/activity books, and itâs on my bucket list to make one someday. A lot of these older books run into some orientalist issues, and while the books are meant to be celebratory (and are largely successful), there is certainly room to expand the genre with a new crop of these books that take a different and perhaps more culturally informed approach.Â
Folklore and crafts go hand in hand, so if any of you want to put together a craft book inspired by folk art/tales/traditions, let me know! Iâm game!
Iâm forever grateful that this book exists, and I encourage you all to check it out from your local library or from the Internet Archive, which has a copy freely available to book online.
Hey! Do you like books? Sure you do! Come see James Braithwaite @thebathwater âa very-serious and award-winning author illustratorâthis Sunday April 19th at @victorysocialclub in Toronto to Celebrate the release of the new kidâs classic Billie Builds a Robocorn!

Books will be available from @typebooks !
Exploring some ceramics at Northern Contemporary (April 9, 2026)
Go see local art. Go. Go now. Or go this weekend if youâre busy right now. Take your mom. Buy her lunch. Seeing local art leads to more local art. Itâs like schrodingerâs artwork; an artwork being observed causes more artworks to exist.
Hereâs the info about the show from @northerncontemporary
Exhibition Dates: April 8 to 14, 2026
Location: Northern Contemporary, 420 Roncesvalles Ave, Toronto (Walk south from Dundas West stationâeasy peasy!)
âJoin us at âHot Stuffâ to see the newest from up-and-coming to established ceramicists who are creating compelling, interesting, and strange works. From illustration-inspired, to esoteric and mystical, to downright weird and whacky, these 34 local artists have been cooking up some serious heat. âHot Stuffâ showcases the newest in ceramics that Toronto has to offer. Come see whatâs hot out of the kiln!â

First character from my Wizard's Parties (2002) redesign project. I don't ~love~ drawing human characters, so this is a nice excuse to practice a bit. Plus, it gives me an excise to fugue out some new digital rendering techniques!
