Well, howdy partner, welcome to #FirstImpressionsFriday organised by
@nerdygirlgaming and we've been playin' Gold Hustle by
@squaredevilgames yee-haw!!
It's a fast-paced, bluffing card game for 2-5 players. Over 10 rounds, players compete with each other to try and get the most gold by the end of the game.
Each turn a card from the central river is turned over and gold nuggets equal to the value of that card are placed on it. Each player then picks a card and simultaneously resolves the card's powers from lowest value to highest. Powers range from sharing the gold on the river at the end of the turn, moving all the gold to the hideout, stealing another player's gold or picking up the cards you've played in previous rounds, as once they're played, they can't be played again.

🤠 The game feels similar to Duel For Cardia, only expanded to include more players
🤠 The theme is fun and works well with what you're trying to do. The gold nuggets are really eye-catching and provide a good focal point
🤠 The artwork brings a modern twist to western characters, which we thought was nice and a little different from the norm
🤠 The powers are nice and varied. It's a game that rewards you for taking note of what other players have played so that you can plan your moves effectively. It's satisfying to block an opponent's card when you've correctly worked out what they're going to play.
🤠 At 2 players I have reservations about how The Gambler works. It steals all gold from an opponent, meaning the game hinges on trying to get the Gambler to fire in the last couple of rounds. If you do, you win. If not, you lose (I mean, it is a gamble after all). This feels like it might be better at higher player counts, at 2 we did house-rule its power
🤠 It's very accessible, the cards are clear and the powers are easy to understand.
Overall, Gold Hustle is a rootin’ tootin’, light card game that we'll definitely play more of, it’s a lot of fun. We want to try it with more players, as it has the potential to be quite chaotic with lots of interaction between players.
