Guerrilla cyanotype in the Pantheon today - figured at the right time the oculus would shine light that could expose the design. Used my prayer beads again - considering the Pantheon is the best preserved Roman temple long transformed into a Christian basilica - I thought it would be neat.

The fig and the olive of Palestine are cited in the Quran as signs of God. Been meditating on that, how God provides again and again.

Had this rosary handmade in el Khan el Khalili in downtown Cairo - 99 beads made of olive wood. Brought it to la Città del Vaticano. I didn’t see Pope Leo or I’d ask him if he likes his Italian beef baptized.

Botanical cyanotype inside the Qalawun Complex in Islamic Cairo. I spent a lot of time in Mamluk monuments while here, particularly in Ramadan, so it was nice to come back and flex the cyanotype muscle.

TONANTZÍN — Laser engraved wood panel, superimposing my minimalist renditions of La Virgen de Guadalupe (based on the painting by Ramón de Torres, slide 3) and Aztec goddess Coatlicue (slide 4) - mother of the moon, stars, and Huitzilopochtli, god of the sun.
Tonantzín is a Nahuatl word meaning "our mother" used to honor goddesses like Coatlicue and which has honored this title of the Virgen since the beginning of her veneration by indigenous Mexicans.
This is a draft from June, before I left Dallas. I'm continuing to develop the piece. It is a definite pastiche of Saturnino Herrán, whose work Nuestros Dioses changed my life when I saw it in the Dallas Museum of Art ten years ago.

Guerrilla cyanotype - using the wrought iron railings on Ponte Bembo, Venice. You’re aware of my effort to incorporate Islamic geometry in my work - it’s nice when Venetian architecture makes it easy for me.
Before the 8 pointed star became a major symbol in Islamic art/architecture from around the world - it was a symbol of Tartessos, Bronze Age civilization in SW Spain & Portugal. It was only through Al-Andalus that this indigenous Iberian symbol became so widespread.

Guerrilla cyanotype - bottom of the drained Lago di Barcis, north of Venice, Italy. Pros of washing your cyanotype in the lake during an Italian winter — you get a good rinse. Cons — my hands got cold.

#cyanoday2024 — World Cyanotype Day, celebrated SE of Marrakech, Morocco en route to the Ourika valley.
Today's print was a blend of plants from the garden at @babzouina (and was modeled by a staff member there), a laser cut stencil of Mexican #azulejos, and a found object (a plastic heart that came off of... a hairclip? when I pick up trash to make art, sometimes I forget to keep track of it. This piece lived next to my wallet and passport for the last month or so, and I finally remembered to use it).
Slides 2-5: Post-exposure but pre-wash; second exposure using the azulejo stencil; first exposure in the garden; bonus: the after from yesterday's print on the Atlantic coast.
I made my first cyanotype earlier this year using @jacquardproducts pre-treated fabric (used again today), and have since coated my own material and otherwise made dozens of prints. Thank you to @xtineburrough@corasonora@b_abb20 for being some of the biggest inspirations in my finally taking the leap on trying this technique.
