The Loop. One day. 248km and 4,400m.
A yearly tradition created by the people’s champ, Allan “Alby” Iaucone, who gives his recount of the day:
“The Loop is my favourite ride of the year and a great way to knock over a big part of the Festive 500. It started chilly, with hot temperatures predicted and low wind, and the pace was high from the outset. This is never a leisurely ride, especially once the gravel begins. A flat tyre in the second sector was a sharp reminder that the Loop takes no prisoners, and with over 30 km of gravel, preparation matters. Limited spares meant a quick repair and back on the road, knowing it wouldn’t be the last challenge of the day.
The dirt climb up Donna Buang split the group again, but the regroup in Warburton offered a brief reset and a chance to restock. Under a blazing sun, we pushed on through the Dandenongs, refilling bottles in Monbulk before the final climb. Heavy legs and looming cramps didn’t stop us from making it back to the Clubhouse, where cold beers and a sausage sizzle capped off the day. Finishing the Loop with mates, sharing the suffering and the love of riding, is always something special, and I’m already looking forward to the 2026 edition.”
The Loop returns December 2026, stay tuned!
