Pasteles making day is more meaningful to me then some actual holidays. It reminds me of sitting at grandmas table. I learned the process year by year, my responsibilities changing as I learned one part of the whole puzzle and then the next. I went from cutting the strings to grating the root vegetables, making the pasteles, learning how to tie them, getting bossed around … all the time trying to figure out what she was doing because she only ever gave partial recipes since she never wanted our food to taste as good as hers 🤣. I remember the first time I made them on my own and gave her the little packages. She outright didn’t believe I had done it. They weren’t the best, I hadn’t quite figured out the consistency and a few things were off, but year after year they got a little better, like anything else, practice makes perfect! So glad I didn’t give up, and this day of family and friends popping in and helping out keeps so much of her spirit alive. Plus, now I get to do the bossing. Mi casa, mis reglas 🤣.
