Soon opening its door in the bustling heart of Ortigas Centre, Spruce Gallery embarks on an unusual mission: the advocacy for indie magazines and little-known zines from every corner of the globe. These often-overlooked treasures deserve the discerning readers of Manila's ardent support, for they bear the mark of authentic beauty, power, and value.
These indie magazines and little-known zines have become a noiseless, passionate rebellion amidst the digital age's clamor of commercialism, conformity, and cursory behaviors. These modest yet profound publications, teeming with artistic vitality and independent outlooks, have a unique energy and weight that beckons the perceptive and thoughtful spirit.
Spruce Gallery understands that Manileños hunger for such treasures. By championing these titles, we embark on an inspiring exploration to connect Manila's weary, originality-starved readers with the intriguing territories of the artistic and literary cosmos. In these publications, we discover the authentic, the rebellious, and the unveneered truths, and, in doing so, we reconnect with the extraordinary voices from everywhere.
In a riotous era dominated by relentless digital noise, superficial bombardments, and fleeting online content, magazines are all the more important because they offer a refuge of respite and intimacy. The well-crafted magazine persists as a reassuring sanctuary of reflection. In its pages, we find a break from the ceaseless stream of flimsy content and rediscover the joy of unhurried, thoughtful, and inspiring engagement.
Spruce will champion independent and authentic voices. We believe in the power of independent magazines, zines, and monographs. Our mission is to inspire creative osmosis, cultivate a devoted and discerning community of magazine lovers, and provide a curated crucible of personal, creative indulgence.
We invite you, dear magazine lover, to join us in this journey of discovery, inspiration, and community as we champion independent voices and the enduring allure of print in the modern world.
Often, in the labyrinthine corridors of the art world, emerging artists are left groping in the dark, excluded from the elitist circles, and overshadowed by those already in the limelight. Hopefully, it's time we recognize why championing these untested visionaries is unquestionably necessary.
Firstly, emerging artists are the lifeblood of imaginative creation. They're not tainted by the demands of a market-driven system, allowing them to experiment, take risks, and pioneer the avant-garde. Secondly, they represent a fresh perspective, challenging more commercially-slanted establishments and pushing the boundaries of creativity.
At Spruce Gallery, we will take a somewhat naive stance: we will attempt to crusade for artistic underdogs. With much curiosity and enthusiasm, we will try to unearth obscure visioners and connect them with audiences open to embrace potential and unproven prospects. By doing so, we hope to inject an occasional, much-needed adrenaline into the art scene, reminding us that brilliance often emerges from the unlikeliest places.
If photography is an act of documentation, Kevin Pineda’s work is an act of reinvention.
In Fragmentia: Oculations of Reality, the artist moves beyond the traditional lens to embrace the “rejected” frame. Utilizing applied stress, brushed steel, and deliberate distortion, Pineda creates a second optical life for his subjects. In this collection, the slip of a face or the twist of a body doesn’t take away from its beauty, it adds a layer of elegant danger.

The Rolling Stone Philippines Pop-up at independent magazine shop Spruce Gallery, which opens May 11, brought together 19th Avenida Publishing House founder Nida Ramirez, the Ateneo de Manila University Press’ Marketing Head Camille Abaya, and Spruce Gallery owner Ric Gindap for a conversation on the state of print publishing today.
Led by Rolling Stone Philippines’ Chief of Editorial Content Jonty Cruz, the talk opened with a discussion on how each panelist had found their way to the business of print. Despite the obstacles each of them has faced, the group spoke candidly about how readers are still actively seeking out physical media.
The Rolling Stone Philippines Pop-up at Spruce Gallery featuring the first anniversary issue and back issues at exclusive prices runs until June 6.

Photography usually wants to be believed.
In Fragmentia: Oculations of Reality, Kevin Pineda begins where belief fractures.
Through altered photographs, torn surfaces, negative treatments, applied stress, and brushed steel, Pineda gives the rejected image a second optical life. Faces slip and bodies distort. Beauty remains, only now it carries a fault line.
The frame becomes an accomplice. The image returns altered, elegant, and faintly dangerous.

Step into a world where rigid architecture meets fluid ambiguity in “Squares of Water,” the debut solo exhibition of Filipino visual artist and architect Jeff Siscar. Curated by Ric Gindap, this captivating show explores the profound tension between structure and uncertainty.
Siscar’s canvases invite you to slow down and question your own perception—what appears as a clear space shifts upon closer look, leaving solitary figures suspended in a moment of hesitation.
Catch the exhibition at SPRUCE Gallery in Ortigas from April 11 to May 8.
