We’re excited and extremely grateful to share that Spread Art has received support from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council and National Endowment for the Artsl ✨
This is the first time in 10 years we have received MACC funding!
As a volunteer-run, community-sustained space, this funding will be extremely impactful. It allows us to continue holding space for artists and our community while taking care of the building that makes it all possible.
This support will go directly toward essential improvements, including:
– Expanding the entry between the theater and gallery for ADA accessibility
– Updating and upgrading electrical
– Repairing the sewer line
– Installing on-demand hot water
– Fixing the upstairs furnace
These are not glamorous upgrades, but they are critical to keeping our doors open, safe, and accessible.
Thank you to everyone who has supported Spread Art over the years — we would not be here without you.
🖤
Did you know that the Spread Art building is the only original building remaining on Rosa Parks/12th between Warren and 94 from the first development in Woodbridge that began 1875?
Built in 1889, the first picture shows our building in 1976 when it was already 87 years old, a Baptist church led by women and the Rosa Parks sign newly installed the year before. Today it stands at 135 years and embedded in our mission to provide space and opportunities for the Detroit community to create, collaborate, and experience culture.
Our building is 25 years older than the train station that could be saved with .01% of what was spent on the station but has been entirely held up by community support. The same week the station reopened, we faced a building violation that could have turned into a blight ticket which would’ve funneled all our funds to the city as punishment for not being able to finish the repairs we have been non stop working on for 7 years. Because of our continuous volunteer efforts and your contributions we were able to clear our external violation within a three day deadline- but this is not the end of it…Next the city will be coming for us internally; commercial compliance we have simultaneously been working towards but haven’t had the financial capacity to reach rapidly.
We began work on our bathrooms in April but have not reached our goal to complete them so we are currently at one non ADA bathroom downstairs rather than the two we originally had. We understand times are hard financially for our community and so even spreading the word to businesses, funders, or those who can benefit from making tax deductible donations is a great contribution.
We hope we can finish this project and meet the standards that will allow us to operate safely so we can continue to serve as an accessible and inclusive cultural space for Detroit.
