This video of Jason Collins giving a pregame speech to my Saunders squad in 2018 was sent to me this week. Jason spent the weekend in Yonkers speaking with YPS and Sarah Lawrence students before joining our staff for a Pride on the Court Game. This is how you make change, showing up and being visible. We lost a giant this week and need others to fill this void.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jason Collins, an LGBTQ Sports Hall of Fame inductee from the Class of 2013 and an upcoming recipient of the 2026 Glenn Burke Activism and Advocacy Award. Collins was the first active player in the NBA to come out of the closet and later served as a NBA Cares Ambassador, inspiring people worldwide with his courage to be openly gay in the highest level of basketball. The Sports Equality Foundation and the LGBTQ Sports Hall of Fame send our thoughts and love out to Jason’s husband, Brunson as well as his friends, family and all who were inspired by him.

Major League Baseball’s Opening Day has arrived! As we celebrate the start of a new season of America’s Pastime, let’s recognize our MLB-affiliated LGBTQ Sports Hall of Fame inductees… ⚾️ Dale Scott worked 30 opening days as a Major League Baseball umpire. He was famously the only umpire who consistently wore the American League’s rare red shirt when behind the plate.  ⚾️ Glenn Burke played four MLB seasons from 1976–1979, and he is widely credited with inventing the high five during a 1977 Dodgers celebration!  ⚾️ Billy Bean played parts of six MLB seasons from 1987–1995, and recorded four hits in his MLB debut, tying a major‑league record. ⚾️ Erik Braverman is the Senior Vice President of Marketing, Community Relations and Broadcasting for the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Erik has been with the Dodgers for over 17 years and has won three World Series titles while part of their staff.

As the NCAA Tournament tips off, we’re celebrating LGBTQ Sports Hall of Famer Jason Collins and his standout college basketball career at Stanford University. A dominant presence in the paint, Collins helped lead Stanford to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, including a memorable Final Four run in 2004, anchoring one of the nation’s toughest defenses. Alongside his twin brother Jarron, Jason became known for his physical play, basketball IQ, and leadership on college basketball’s biggest stage. Long before he made history in the NBA, Jason Collins was already showing what it meant to compete with integrity, toughness, and team-first leadership during March Madness. This tournament season, we honor not just the moments—but the trailblazers who made them matter. #MarchMadness #NCAATournament #JasonCollins #LGBTQSportsHallOfFame #StanfordBasketball #BasketballHistory #Trailblazers #RepresentationMatters
