Spookystack dives into the eerie, shadowy side of electroclash in the music video premiere of his newly released track ‘Paper Skin’ - out now on House of Feelings Records !! Spookystack is Nelson Fisher, & it was his DFA-inspired production that first caught my attention, so it came as no surprise when I found out his band, Public Circuit, just opened for LCD Soundsystem. No doubt he picked up a thing or two from watching the legend himself, as Fisher arrives on the NYC scene already collecting major accolades & music scene XP. The distant industrial world Fisher has created on ‘Paper Skin’ sounds both unsettling and addictive, with its catchy chaos nicely grounded by the drums and main bass synth. Fisher’s vocals hit with the same cool intensity as Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode, giving the track a dark, distinctive spin on the electroclash genre. The unpredictable, glitchy Crystal Castles infused instrumentation & crunchy 8-bit accents turn the volume up a notch (preferably to eleven), pairing perfectly with the black & white creepypasta aesthetics of the music video - featuring a killer clown that looks like it wandered straight out of David Lynch’s Black Lodge. On his new single “Paper Skin,” as well as his forthcoming EP, Spookystack is dressed to kill (metaphorically of course) with slinky melodic bangers that make Fisher another indie artist to keep on your radar. NEW SIGNEE: House of Feelings welcomes @spookystack to our management roster. When I think of Spookystack, I think of the punk edginess of my favorite dance music; the sneer that gave early DFA and minimalist jokesters Paranoid London that sense of mischief on the floor and behind the decks. Spooky has that in spades, and as one third of the rising electroclash act @publiccircuitband , he recently shared the stage with the keepers of that lineage, LCD Soundsystem. But DFA and Paranoid London needed to sound dumb. Maybe their rock band backgrounds kept them rigidly married to the idea that “this could be you” had to be part of the message. “It’s not that hard!” “This is so funny, what we’re doing!” Hence the constant winks and dodges. But Spookystack is simply better than that. When I listen to his tracks, I hear the giggles, but I’m so floored by the mastery of his palette and sonic station that I want to rewind and listen and analyze, not emulate. This is not just choreographed knob turning; in the glitchiness emerges a vivid picture, like an impressionist painter who fills a canvas with thrashes and dots but is actually crafting a much fuller and gentler image when the viewer steps back. It can be funny but it’s not a joke. His music doesn’t need to hide like that. Spookystack has swagger and chops.
