I WISH I WAS LIKE YOU was my proof-of-existence novel. A story that took hold after my father died. A book based on my memory of being a ghost, an invisible creature walking among the living, the strangeness of their sense of purpose and their belief that what they were doing would matter to other people, to the universe, to an unknown consciousness. I stood outside of their efforts. I took the bus to another part of the city. I watched the construction of new buildings paid for by the newly wealthy. I saw people who were like me, shabby outsiders, but we didn't greet one another. We were pale shadows and nothing could break the spell of our non-existence. I wrote the book to capture that state of mind. I wrote myself back into existence. IWIWLY has a strange effect on some people. Editors and film producers and fiction readers have found it tantalizing, dizzying, fascinating, and frightening. It has come ridiculously close to being optioned for film/tv adaptation but no one has had the nerve to fully embrace the darkness at its heart. The good news this year is that IWIWLY has found a home with a publisher who is not afraid of weird. I don't mean charming weird or twee weird or weird made presentable with gorgeous language and design. I'm talking not-like-I've-seen-before-and-maybe-tinged-with-insanity weird. In the coming months IWIWLY will have a crazy, new, reprint edition and as my friend and champion Joe Pulver would say, I am over the moon about it. Details will be announced at a future date. I’m just glad to BE HERE. “Fucking five stars all day, every day forever. Miskowski wrote like her life depended on it.” - Sadie Hartmann (Mother Horror) “I love S.P. Miskowski’s I Wish I Was Like You, as biting and funny and sexy and sad a grunge-era ghost story as you could hope for.” - Shaun Hamill, author of A Cosmology of Monsters "A poison-pen love letter to 1990s Seattle, Miskowski's black humour, precise observations, and well-drawn characters make this novel an absolute pleasure to read.” - Yves Tourigny “We blamed the dead guy. People always do."

Why did I decide to charge subscribers only $5 a month to read new fiction at my Substack account? It's less than the price of a Caffè Mocha at Starbucks, that's why. For less than a monthly specialty coffee, readers get a couple of new sections of my serialized story, YOU REMIND ME OF ME, every week! And anyone can read my occasional flash fiction with or without subscribing. I'm not going to try and convince anyone with my publication credits and awards. All I ask is that you read the first two sections, free of charge, and see if you want to keep reading. If you do, then hand over the price of a Caffè Mocha, tune in for each new section, and give yourself a pat on the back for supporting brand new, non-AI fiction by a living writer who loves you. 😘 Thanks! @lgrlit

Margaret Atwood said in an interview she can't help holding a grudge because she's a Scorpio. I'm an Aries with ADHD and I hold grudges too. I just can't remember against whom. I also forget that most of the people I love exist--until I see them again, and then I adore them. If you're on my follow list and haven't heard from me in ages, come over and say hello. I'll be ecstatic to re-discover you're still alive.❤️

Need a fun read for the weekend? Something a little bit creepy? Parker Dillon can’t win. Just as she’s trying to start her journalism career, her aunt sells the website where she works, and the new owner is keen to replace employees with AI. But her luck seems to turn when she discovers an intriguing cold pitch buried in her aunt’s files...

One challenge when it comes to book marketing is a personal shortcoming, not something I'm proud of: I’m at a loss regarding anything that requires being in tune with the zeitgeist, whatever it consists of at any given time. Whatever the zeitgeist is, I’m the opposite of that. I’m not cool and I don’t care what’s trending. My attention is naturally drawn to the weird and unspectacular. The entire 18-month “news and entertainment” portion of my editorial career could be characterized by one conversation in which a publisher warned me to, “Get the f***ing untranslated Albanian poets off the cover…” A line I used twice in fiction because it was too good not to. 😊

No bees were harmed in the making of this book cover. Some characters were harmed in the story, but only because they attacked Ann Mason. Or lied to her. Or made fun of her. Or looked at her funny. Or...
