Field Story Of The Week: Chasing Turkeys In A Blizzard

For those of you who haven’t spent much time out west, it snows. Like a lot. And not just in the winter. There is almost always a chance of snow in spring for western states especially if it’s April and you’re hunting in the mountains. Recently, we had the chance to talk to @aidan.pike11 about hunting in a blizzard while trying to get his college buddy his first bird.

“The first weekend of turkey season opened with a snowstorm. Even before we left town, I could tell we were in for it, but I kept convincing myself we’d drive out of the weather. Instead, the snow only got worse. By the time we reached our spot a few hours away, the roads were slick, the woods were white, and we were already soaked and cold”.

Two duck decoys recently sold for over $1M each. The sales mark the first and second times a collectible duck decoy has topped the $1M mark at auction and they are likely the most expensive duck decoys ever sold.
The exceptionally valuable decoys were offered at the April @guyetteanddeeter auction in Chicago, Illinois. The auction house was selling decoys from the Jim and Diane Cook collection, which, according to the auction house, is an opportunity akin to the Super Bowl or Tour de France for decoy collectors. The two decoys that hit the million dollar mark included a wood duck carved by Joseph Lincoln in the early 1900s and a preening wigeon carved by Elmer Crowell.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) recently announced citations in two separate whooping crane poaching incidents, both of which involved crawfish farms in Evangeline Parish. Whooping cranes, which are protected under the Endangered Species Act, are widely considered one of the rarest species of birds in the world. Today there are approximately 800 whooping cranes in three separate wild populations.
“These two illegally shot and killed whooping cranes represented 2.5 percent of the non-migratory population of whooping cranes in Louisiana, which now stands at just under 80 individuals,” explains the LDWF.
