Reading and writing are the basis for learning in most English speaking societies, but if youâre neurodivergent, dyslexic for example, this can be agonising from an early age.
1 in 10 people around the world are dyslexic. 2 in 5 children excluded from school in the UK and the USA are dyslexic. Up to 50% of prison populations are diagnosed with dyslexia while there is an equal proportion among arts practitioners and mathematicians.
Thereâs been some research from scientists in Hong Kong, Japan and the UK that might support dyslexia in the English language world.
The research identifies different signalling areas in the brain related to image and scanning recognition and these in turn show that itâs possible to be âdyslexicâ in English, but not in, for example, Chinese, where the written language is a collection of interconnected images, rather than an alphabetical system
But whatâs this really driving at? The fact is people have different brains and reading is not necessarily something that needs eyes. Increasingly people read with audiobooks because you can read more books and for those who find the visual scanning of words difficult in whatever language they are reading in, audiobooks offer an alternative way to enjoy the everyday magic of reading.
A recent study by researchers at University College London and the University of Florida published in iScience found an incredible decline of more than 40 percent in daily reading for pleasure in the UK and US over the past two decades.
Reading is proven to build empathy, concentration and critical thinking. We cannot do without it. It gives all of us a chance to think and reflect, on their own as well as in conversation.
In this year, the Year of Reading, we want to reverse the trend. We want to see more and more people enjoying reading.. In print and of course in audio.

With the Gift of the Year finals in sight, weâre exploring new ways to make audiobooks visible.
Our Audiobook in a Card already transforms listening into something tangible. But what does it look like to read with your ears?
Working with photographer Toby Glanville, weâre beginning to visualise the quiet, personal world of audiobook listening.
These are early glimpses from that process - seeing the invisible, as listening takes shape.
