In case you missed it, we were at the recent American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) conference. Read on to hear how Shajia from our team found it! "Representing Spinal Research at the annual ASIA Scientific Meeting was a brilliant opportunity to hear leading researchers share their latest findings in spinal cord injury (SCI) research. "Key course themes included the importance of SCI biobanking and the need for international coordination to strengthen biobank infrastructure, the potential of smart trials and innovative trial designs to address the limitations of traditional clinical trials in SCI, and the evolving use of neuromodulation to restore function after injury. "Scientific meetings like ASIA play an important role in advancing knowledge by fostering collaboration, encouraging critical discussion, and supporting innovation and discovery. In the field of spinal cord injury, these meetings are particularly important for sharing emerging evidence, developing best practice, and accelerating the translation of new approaches into meaningful improvements for the SCI community."

Today, Spinal Research is proud to join charities across the UK to mark Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day (SCIAD), bringing together the spinal cord injury community to raise awareness and share real experiences. We’re collaborating with ten other spinal cord injury charities to raise awareness of paralysis through our social media channels. Spinal Research has chosen to shine a light on the lived experiences of people affected by spinal cord injury. Keep an eye on our socials later today for a new video featuring some of our fantastic ambassadors. SCIAD is also a moment to highlight progress in research. As new treatments begin to emerge, there is growing optimism about what the future could hold, but continued support and collaboration remain essential to move science forward 💙 @aspirecharity @backuptrust @cauda_equina_spinalcordinjury @horatiosgarden @inspirefoundationuk @regaincharityuk @spinalinjuriesscotland @spinal_injuries @spinalresearch @lifeafterpara @wheelpower_official

At the London Marathon this year, law graduate Finlay ran the whole course barefoot in support of Spinal Research. Finley decided to take on this challenge because he was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and spinal nerve compression. He says this gave him insight into how vital spinal health is to quality of life. “This was very much a personal and symbolic challenge. I don’t recommend anyone running a barefoot marathon on tarmac and I don’t think I would ever do it again, but this was the ultimate way of showing how resilient I now am and how amazing the human body is.” Well done, Finlay! You can read his full story on the Spinal Research website.

Keep going, Neil! In January, Neil Heaton began a huge challenge. Completing a half marathon a month for ten months straight. Neil took on his last half marathon on 18 April, and is now preparing for his next one. Neil chose to take on this challenge in honour of his wife's strength and recovery after spinal surgery. With each half marathon he completes, Neil is bringing us closer to a world where paralysis can be cured.

Britain's former strongest disabled man is set to take on a double marathon challenge with his son this week. Pete Linnett will be hand cycling from Leicester to Buckingham Palace in support of his son Harry, who is running the London Marathon on Sunday for Spinal Research. Pete says: “It will be tough, but I really wanted to support Harry and to raise money for Spinal Research, a charity that means so much to the whole family. I’m one of the lucky few who can still walk, which is why I support those who cannot.” Best of luck to Pete and Harry! Visit the news section of our website to hear their full story.
