SPEED AND STRIKE VOL 7 Who Built The World? Our 2nd season of the year is an attempt to chart the modern world, its political horror, monopolies of violence and most importantly, who created it. Our journey will begin with the creation of the 'post-fascist' world post-ww2, a society built in collaboration with the fascist ruling classes. We'll see a psychological grounding for the new society in 2 examinations of Richard Nixon; the founding personality of the modern world. And finally we'll see a film about one of the many fascist paramilitary groups of history and the ways in which they pathologise their actions. April 22nd Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975, Pier Paolo Pasolini) Pasolini's legendary and infamous final film. An adaptation of Marquis De Sade's similarly infamous novel the film follows a group of fascists as they enact 120 days of mental, physical and sexual torture on a group of teenagers. Inspired by Pasolini's own beliefs about post-fascist Italy the film is as politically incisive and important as it is harrowing (if not more). In collaboration with @ad_england to celebrate the recent acquisition of LPs of the film. More info to be released about this screening soon May 27th Secret Honor (1984, Robert Altman) + Everyone is Richard Nixon (Adam Curtis) Secret Honor is a masterful one man play directed elegantly and beautifully by one of America's greatest directors. Showing the psychological deterioration of Richard Nixon the night before he resigns from office the film gets into all the nitty gritties of his life; his mummy issue, Kennedy, Dallas, Watergate, Bohemian Grove. It's all there. Accompanied by an Adam Curtis Newswipe segment about how we are all paranoid weirdos like Richard Nixon June 17th The Act of Killing (2012, Joshua Oppenheimer) Joshua Oppenheimer's bleak and devastating documentary about the anti-communist death squads of the Suharto fascist government in Indonesia follows the people who did these killings as they reenact them for Oppenheimer and his film crew. A stunning portrait of the minds of some of history's most reprehensible but also unremarkable people. Poster by @bigtuffman

THE BOOK OF FRANZ TICKETS ON SALE LATER TODAY. 'Sorrowful and great is the artist's destiny.' Join us on the 25th of March for the final screening in the "Book of _____" series; Ken Russell's "LISZTOMANIA". Loosely a biopic examining Liszt's self-destructive and homoerotic friendship with Robert Wagner the film grapples more with another kind of -mania, that of Beatlesmania. Not content to just be a post-modern biography of Franz Liszt the film takes the more daring position of being a film analysing the post-war cultural rupturing as something that has happened before. The film is full of musicians, Liszt himself played by The Who frontman Roger Daltry, Ringo Starr appears as The Pope, Rich Wakeman the keyboardist of Yes plays a role. It's a phantasmagoric and deeply provocative film in the way that all of Russell's films are but this one especially rings something deep inside with its explorations of fascism and pop culture. So please join us for one Ken Russell's underseen gems!!

THE BOOK OF YUKIO TICKETS ON SALE LATER TODAY. ‘Isn’t there anyone among you fellows who will follow me?’ - Yukio Mishima, November 25th, 1970. Paul Schrader's enigmatic biopic of Yukio Mishima doesn't just dramatise his last day alive in the build up to the coup atrempt that would ultimately fail forcing Mishima to commit ritual suicide, it adapts his work as a portal into his mind. Every story a reflection of some inner truth that Mishima wrote into every page, a reflection of his own fascism and nihilism, a reflection of his own struggle to accept even the smallest part of himself. With a dynamite performance by Ken Ogata as Mishima as well as Phillip Glass' best work not only in film but in his whole career AND sets designed by the great Eiko Ishioka (costume designer for Bram Stoker's Dracula, director of the Cocoon video by Bjork AND Tarsem Singh collaborator). It's a feast visually, mentally and emotionally as Schrader tries to grapple with the self loathing and literalised fascist death drive of Japan's greatest author.
